Pow wow at Mauch Chunk Lake this weekend

The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania is hosting a pow wow from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Mauch Chunk Lake.

All are welcome to attend to learn of culture, heritage, and traditions.

Admission is free. Donations are appreciated.

There will be an inner circle, where dancing, drumming, singing and stories are told to the public.

The Gray Cloud Singers are the host drum, with Stony’s Boys, Mwenkene Kshuwsu Asuwichick and Medicine Horse Singers.

Lead dancers are Matthew White Eagle and Chris Mourning Dove Clair. Head veteran is Richard Quiet Hawk Welker and emcee is Barry Lee Christy.

Veterans will be honored during opening ceremonies.

Audience participation dances will be held, including a candy dance for the children each day.

An outer circle features artisans and crafters, offering exhibitions and demonstrations by members of various tribes.

There will also be food vendors (both native and local booths) as well as various nonprofit information booths.

Saturday afternoon will feature entertainment by Brother Sun Band, (formerly Jim Beer Family Band) a contemporary Americana band featuring members of the Lenape tribe.

A raffle featuring grand prizes of a Star Quilt created and donated by tribal member Marc Strong, “Dancing On Turtle Island” a print on canvas painting created and donated by the emcee, along with items donated by crafters.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket. No alcohol or drug use permitted.Dogs must be leashed and curbed. All COVID-19 protocol will be implemented.
