New glamping opportunity opens in Albrightsville

Camptel in Albrightsville has opened, offering an opportunity for “glamping” in the Poconos.

“Glamping” is camping with modern luxuries, with shipping containers that have been turned into little “homes,” ranging from 19 feet to 42 feet. Owners Joanne and Doug Colkilt began buying shipping containers in Florida to provide affordable housing and homes for the homeless.

The containers are purchased mainly in Florida and the work to turn them into glamping units is done on property.

The Colkilts do the décor and regional manager, David Marinich, oversees the refurbishing of the containers. Every unit has a theme and a name, including “Sunshine,” “Mr. Plum,” a plum colored unit, “Raccoon Crossing,” “Cowgirl,” and “Ethel,” named for Mr. Marinich’s grandmother. “The Eagles Nest,” for Philly fans is in the process of being done. The “Gymtainer” includes free weights, a treadmill and a small sauna.

The 10-acre property has 24 units open and they are working on a total of 50 units.

Each container has a full bathroom, kitchen area, beds, television, grill and a fire pit. Linens, towels, shampoo and firewood are provided.

A community fire pit and pavilion with barbecues is in the middle of the property, with an oversized chess game and cornhole. Other amenities include hot tubs, electric bikes, horseshoes, boccie ball and kayaks for use at nearby Hickory Run Park. Paintball and both outdoor and indoor bouncy structures are available for kids. A Sauna is also being set up.

All facilities will be open year-round. Both heat and air conditioning are available in every unit.

Units can accommodate 2-6 people, with “Rex” being a two-story unit for 6. A handicap accessible container is also available.

“The Canteen” with food and beverage, as well as a camp store will be open as soon as staffing needs are met.

General manager Jessica Kratzer is “excited to have the property in full swing and share this new experience in the Poconos.”

Events will be planned as Camptel expands.

Containers can be rented nightly or weekly.

Camptel is at 2624 Route 534, Albrightsville.
