Local roundup: Results from Sept. 1

Northwestern posted wins in boys and girls soccer on Thursday, and also picked up a victory in golf action, while Pleasant Valley’s field hockey, golf and volleyball teams all recorded wins.

Elsewhere, Jim Thorpe posted wins in girls soccer and volleyball, while Palmerton posted victories in girls soccer and golf action. The Marian and Panther Valley volleyball teams also were victorious, as were the Lehighton boys soccer and Tamaqua golf squads.

BOYS SOCCER

Pen Argyl-Northwestern

Northwestern blanked Pen Argyl, 3-0, in a Colonial League battle.

Josh Zellner had a pair of goals for the Tigers, and Logan Mesics also found the back of the net. Matt Johnson had a pair of assists.

Lehighton-LLA

Mason Marchessault’s big game highlighted Lehighton’s 11-3 win over Lincoln Leadership Academy.

Marchessault tallied four goals and four assists to lead the assault as the Indians erupted for eight goals in the opening half. Lehighton (4-0) outshot Lincoln Leadership 42-10.

Lincoln Leadership Academy falls to 0-2 on the season.

Northern Lehigh-Wilson

Wilson routed Northern Lehigh for a 6-1 victory in Colonial League play.

Bryce LoPinto scored for the Bulldogs, while Logan Berfield was credited with the assist. Ethan Kunkle (six first-half saves) and Isaiah Simmons (nine second-half saves) both split time in net for Northern Lehigh.

Northern Lehigh slides to 1-1 overall (0-1 CL), while Wilson moves to 1-3 (1-1).

Salisbury-Palmerton

Salisbury knocked off Palmerton for a 4-1 Colonial League victory.

Trevor Anthony scored for the Bombers, while Trey Sterling made 12 saves.

Palmerton slips to 0-3 overall (1-1 CL), while Salisbury jumps to 1-2 (0-2).

FIELD HOCKEY

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pleasant Valley put together a dominating effort in a 9-0 shutout over Pocono Mountain West in East Penn Conference North play.

Mattison Hyland tallied four goals for the Bears, while Heather Todaro and Anayah Accilien each added a pair of scores.

Pleasant Valley held Pocono Mountain West without a shot on goal, holding a 35-0 edge.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Marian

Jim Thorpe built a big advantage and cruised to a 13-0 victory over Marian in Schuylkill League play.

The Olympians stormed out to an 11-0 lead in the opening half and had 10 different scorers, led by Mackenzie Yuhas’ three-goal performance. Lauren LeKites added a pair of goals.

It was the second straight shutout for the Olympians, as goalie Olivia Rosenberger has not yet allowed a goal this season.

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Three first-half goals sparked Northwestern to a 4-0 Colonial League win over Pen Argyl.

Katie Brensinger, Alexis Vennera and Brook Balliet led the Tigers, as the trio all finished with a goal and an assist, while Paige Bissell added a goal and Sammy Bardonner was credited with an assist.

Northwestern improves to 4-1 overall (2-0 CL), while Pen Argyl falls to 2-2 (1-1).

Palmerton-Salisbury

Nataly Walters’ hat-trick highlighted Palmerton’s 6-0 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

Emma Martinez, Beth Morgan and Ella Baumgardt also scored in the win. Sam Perloni had two assists, while Cora Wentz also was credited with an assist.

Courtney Connell made one save, while Walters stopped two shots.

Palmerton stays unbeaten at 2-0 overall (2-0 CL), while Salisbury falls to 0-2 (0-2).

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Blue Mountain scored early and often in a 7-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Eagles erupted for seven goals in the opening half. Sophia Chipriano scored three goals and had three assists for Blue Mountain. Also adding goals for the Eagles were Reese Baldwin, Kelly Canfield and Kiera Nunemacher.

Sarah Hope had the lone goal for Tamaqua. Cecelia Ulicny had five saves for the Raiders, while Veronica Scott added three.

GOLF

Lehighton-Tamaqua

Tamaqua picked up a 362-385 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.

Peter McGinley led the Blue Raiders with an 83.

Trey Spring posted medalist honors for the Indians with an 82.

Tamaqua improves to 6-3 on the season, while Lehighton slips to 2-6 overall.

Tyler Hager and Connor Reinhard both once again turned in strong performances, as Hager posted medalist honors with a two-under-par 70, while Reinhard followed with a 77.

Joey DosSantos led the Green Knights with a 90.

Palmerton moves to 10-0 overall (9-0 CL), while Pen Argyl falls to 5-4 (5-4).

Mark Domski led Jim Thorpe with a 98, while Brydon Gray fired a 100.

Jack Nemshick paced the Wreckers (4-1) with an 86.

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe swept Lehighton, 25-22, 25-13, 25-10, in a Schuylkill League match.

Maggy Hallihan led the Olympians with 22 assists, 11 service points, four aces, three kills and three digs, while Brooke Mitzen chipped in with 12 service points, eight kills, five aces and four digs. Leah Figura added six kills, four digs and three service points.

Lily Kershner had six kills, and Makenna Snyder added five kills for the Indians. Madelyn Sofranko had 11 assists, and Lyla Kershner had six digs.

Marian-Shenandoah Valley

Marian opened Schuylkill League play with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-12 victory over host Shenandoah Valley.

Megan Paisley paced the Fillies, as she finished with nine kills, nine digs and two aces, while Julia Meiss dished out 16 assists, three aces and two blocks.

Jenna Goff (seven digs, five kills) and Fatikha Tikhtova (six kills, five blocks) both played key roles in the Fillies improving to 2-1 overall, and 1-0 in the league.

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

Southern Lehigh defeated Northwestern 3-1 in Colonial League action.

Senior Jenna Breininger paced the Tigers with 11 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Shannon Green recorded 24 assists and six digs, and senior Brooke Dwane added 31 digs and three aces.

Hazleton-Panther Valley

Panther Valley swept Hazleton, 25-19, 25-10, 25-15, in a non-league match.

Riley McArdle had 12 kills, and Morgan Orsulak added six kills for the Panthers. Orsulak paced the Panthers with 11 assists, while Abby Benack chipped in with seven assists and nine digs.

ES South-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley got the best of East Stroudsburg South to come away with a 25-6, 25-7, 25-12 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Hannah Akob fired seven aces with three kills and three digs for the Bears, while Brianna Bruckman dished out 13 assists and had one ace.

Lexi Womack had six kills, two aces and two digs for PV, while Jackie James (four kills, three digs, two aces, two blocks), and Sarah Ballek (four kills, two blocks) also helped the Bears move to 3-0 overall on the season.

Weatherly-Mahanoy Area

Mahanoy Area topped Weatherly for a 25-9, 25-6, 25-15 Schuylkill League win.

Huntyr Eickhorst had three digs, two assists and one kill for the Wreckers, while Taylor Davidovich added five assists and one kill. Kelly Michael added three kills and Rebecca Schell four service points for the Wreckers, who slip to 1-2 on the season.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Blue Mountain swept Tamaqua 25-7, 25-20, 25-9 in Schuylkill League action.

The Blue Raiders were led by Sara Coccio, who had three digs and five blocks.
