Machalik leads Bomber Blitz

Marshawn Lynch was the force behind Beast Mode.

Matt Machalik spearheads the Bomber Blitz.

While Lynch delivered seismographic runs with thunderous power during his time in Seattle, Machalik orchestrates a dynamic Palmerton offense that soars above the Blue Mountain with both his arm and his legs.

His dual-threat ability was on display in Week 1.

Machalik threw for 237 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 111 yards and two scores in last Friday’s 42-29 victory over Lehighton, a performance that earned him the Times News Football Player of the Week honors.

There were no Beast Quakes by Machalik on Friday night like the one Lynch delivered for the Seahawks in a playoff game against the Saints.

Just another big-time performance from the junior signal-caller, who already has plenty of highlight-reel moments under his belt.

“Matt definitely has the ‘It’ factor,” Bombers’ head coach Chris Walkowiak said of Machalik. “He has tremendous moxie. He’s poised, cool under pressure. Obviously, he’s a tremendous athlete first of all. But he’s a student of the game. He studies, he watches a lot of film, he has great vision, great instincts. On our pass plays, he’s not looking just to take off; he’s scanning the field, keeps the eyes down field. And then when it’s not there, he knows to run.

“And this year, he’s been great about not taking the extra shot and running out of bounds, which we’ve been teaching him. But then also, he has the great speed and he trucked some people on Friday night running them over. He had a 400-pound squat - he’s 190 pounds, and he has a 400-pound squat. So he puts the time in the weight room, and it’s just everything. And he’s humble. He’s said previously when asked about personal goals, he said my personal goals are that we win as a team. It’s not about stats for him, it’s about at the end of the day, end of the week going 1-0. And you can’t ask for a better leader and someone that you would want to play for as a teammate.”

Machalik did damage with his arm in the first half against the Indians, throwing three touchdowns to Kendall Robinson and another scoring strike to Daniel Lucykanish to give Palmerton a 28-3 halftime lead.

“The offseason really helped,” said Machalik, who finished 12-of-24 through the air. “The 7-on-7s that we do in the summer and the spring workouts, getting outside, that really helps us to develop some chemistry between all of us. It was just nice to have, because you know when they’re going to come out of their breaks, or when they’re even with their guy just to throw it up and they’re going to go up and make a play. Being able to have that offseason, and spending time with them on and off the field and just doing those routes, you get that confidence that they’re going to go make that play.”

After Lehighton cut the deficit to 28-17 in the second half, Machalik delivered a 13-yard rushing touchdown on a drive that was aided by a 35-yard pass play to Dalton Drake.

The Bombers answered another Indians score with a Machalik rushing touchdown later in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.

“Matt gets a look in his eyes, I’ve seen it as a coach, and I know when he’s in a different mode,” said Walkowiak. “He’s in Beast Mode in that point and time, where you know, OK, he’s taking over, we’re going to do this no matter what. You see that. You feel confident and calm. He doesn’t have to do it by himself, but you feel with that presence, we’re going to be all right.

“He’s a playmaker. In game time, crunch time, he’s the kid that you definitely want having the ball or around the ball.”

Palmerton finished the game with 414 yards of total offense, answering scores and showcasing the talent that has helped the Blue Bombers take flight.

“It was amazing how we executed,” said Machalik. “We just knew the matchups going into the game and we executed the gameplan, and that’s all we needed to do. I wouldn’t be able to win this award without those guys, and the blocking up front was just amazing. They gave me that time to throw the ball and the wide receivers made plays. Kendall Robinson went up and he made some tremendous plays, going up and getting those balls, and finding the space in the end-zone.

“And Dalton Drake catching a crucial third down right across the middle, that was not an easy pass to catch. And Daniel Lucykanish catching that 40-yard pass and scoring when he had pretty good coverage on him all night. It was just guys like that getting open, and I was able to find them and they deserve the ball when they can find that space.”

The way Machalik and the Palmerton offense operate, there should be plenty of room for all of the Bombers’ playmakers to take flight this season.
