Nomad Distilling opens in Jim Thorpe with variety of drinks
Nomad Distilling in Williamsport opened a location in Jim Thorpe in July.
“That town is just riddled with some really cool history,” Sarah Kudalack, co-owner of Nomad Distilling, said. “I am so excited to be a part of that community where you can shop small and support local businesses. No wonder why people like to come here.”
Kudalack and her husband, Frank, purchased the former Mountain Top Distillery in 2018. They renamed it Nomad Distilling, because she said it describes them perfectly, since they’ve lived several places.
Before moving to the Williamsport area, the entrepreneurial couple made a business out of flipping houses in Philadelphia. Frank has a background in commodities, consulting, real estate, construction and management. Sarah’s background is in marketing, public relations, wedding consultant and event planning. They found Williamsport when Sarah’s parents moved there. Soon after, they decided to start a new chapter in their life and “explore something different,” Sarah Kudalack said.
They found success not long after renovating, rebranding and exploring new flavor options.
“2019 was a good year,” she said.
The couple began looking to expand to a second location, and then COVID hit. Kudalack said they focused on sticking close to home, but the desire to explore hit them again.
“Timing is never going to be perfect,” she said. “A lot of our business in Williamsport is tourism, so we thought why don’t we look for other places where tourism is big.”
The couple heard about Jim Thorpe from neighbors, so they checked it out and liked the town.
They found a spot in the historic district and now their second location is at 67 Race St.
Nomad Distilling’s products consist of whiskey, bourbon, a bramble or wine and spirit, and six flavors of moonshine. All in 750-milliliter bottles. Prices range from $22 to $36 per bottle.
Tapped is their signature liquor. It is a maple-flavored whiskey made with local Pennsylvania maple syrup.
Tapped is 70 proof corn whiskey and doesn’t include any artificial flavors or sweeteners.
According to their website, Tapped is “flavored as a sipping whiskey on the rocks or straight.” It can also be mixed with soda, and is $32 a bottle.
Made from clear corn whiskey, 91 is just that - 91 proof. The website describes it as having a peppery flavor, which makes it good in a Bloody Mary or as a substitute in a tequila cocktail recipe. It is $28 a bottle.
Noble Bourbon is a mixture of alcohol from corn, wheat, rye and barley. It is described as smooth with a touch of spice. At 86 proof, it is $36 a bottle.
Blackberry Bramble has a much lower proof at 40. It is a neutral grain mixed with a grape wine and natural flavoring. Nomad recommends mixing it with lemonade and soda, or drinking it alone. It costs $25 a bottle.
Then there are the flavored moonshines made from corn whiskey. All cost $22 a bottle, except for the root beer flavored shine at $24 a bottle.
The flavors include:
• Lemon - Made with lemon juice, it is described as a “nice balance of tart and sweet,” and can be mixed with iced tea or grapefruit-flavored soda
• Apple pie - Often used as a holiday cocktail, it can be mixed with cranberry juice and lemon-lime soda for a summer drink
• Peach - It is made from peach nectar and Nomad describes it as being “beyond refreshing.”
• Blueberry - Nomad recommends mixing this shine with a lemon-lime soda and some mint.
• Sweet tea - Brewed with black tea, this one is patterned after southern sweet tea.
• Root beer - For a float with a kick, Nomad recommends mixing it with cream soda.
Nomad Distilling offers tastings at both locations. A tasting consists of a flight of six spirits for $5.
Nomad offers subscription boxes with one or two spirits, a recipe card, pint glass, and mixers. The boxes are delivered five times a year: April/May, June/July, August/September, October/November and December.
It has gift boxes, too, with a spirit and glasses, nip bottles with 50 milliliters of spirits in four- or six-pack carriers, Nomad hats and pint glasses, and gift cards. Shipping is available in Pennsylvania and New York.
The Jim Thorpe location is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Call 570-745-2332 or go to nomaddistilling.com for more information.
