August 24, 1947 - Umpires reverse a call at the plate to not only give Lansford a 3-2 victory over Lehighton to win its Panther Valley League playoff series, but also set off a riot as spectators storm the field. With two outs and two on base in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning, Joe Fignar hits a ball that glances off the third baseman’s glove and rolls into foul territory. Base runner “Toss” Ponting tries to score on the play but the throw home beats him by six feet. The third base umpire, however, confers with the home plate ump and the call is changed saying the ball was dropped. Fans rush the field and Lehighton ends up filing a protest.
