The Hazleton Art League’s August exhibition: “Maybe it Was Just a Dream,” featuring two local artists - David Corrado and Marcy Lanza i- s still open for viewing. The exhibit at The Hayden Family Center for the Arts, 31 W. Broad St., Hazleton, will be on display through Sunday.
Corrado paints in the fine arts tradition, and is an illustrator and author of graphic novels.
A native of Hazleton, he started at a young age when his maternal grandfather introduced him drawing and painting. After graduating from Penn State University, Corrado did altar paintings for churches, portraits for RC Theaters, and murals for both American Legion Post 473 in Freeland and the FOP at Hazleton City Hall.
Lanza was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. After marrying and raising a family, Lanza followed her dream and graduated from The Art Students League in New York City. Following art school, she lived in Liverpool, England, for 14 years. While there, her art really took off. Lanza says, “I’m very experimental,” putting a dab of Wesson oil in watercolor to see what happens, or painting with rotten cherries.
Lanza came to Hazleton after her daughter moved there. Like most people during the pandemic, she was house bound. As a result, a good number of her new pieces are “pandemic pieces.” Much of Lanza’s art is abstract with fine lines and brilliant colors. Flowers and nude figures also appear in her work.
These two artists, from different generations, came up with “Maybe it Was Just a Dream” as a name for their exhibition, considering that the works are quite varied. Corrado’s paintings are portraits, and Lanza’s are mostly abstract.
According to Marcy, she and David thought that the title of the exhibition would encourage people “to try to figure out what is meant by that, and apply it to the artwork.”
