Monroe County voters may soon find themselves voting by computer.

Commissioner James Cadue, board chairman, said the county is examining the possibility of placing a referendum on this November’s ballot asking voters whether they would favor switching to computerized ballots.

If the new system goes into effect, voters entering their local polling place would see instead of the traditional voting booth with a curtain, a temporary structure with several booths, inside one of which the voter would mark a paper ballot. The ballot would then be entered into the computer.

The new system would cost about $100,000 and would be paid for out of the county’s general fund.
