Thirteen fire companies from two counties battled a blaze Sunday at a Monroe County landmark that was destroyed.

The Luna Rosa restaurant was leveled by the inferno that was fully involved when firefighters arrived at the scene and were greeted by raging flames.

Fire Chief Billy Tippett of Polk Township, who directed the firefighting operations, said all the firefighters could do was try to contain the flames until the structure was left ruined and declared under control some six hours later.

The fire scene is located along Route 209, which was closed from Burger Hollow to Gilbert roads.
