No meeting

The meeting of the Eldred Township Planning Commission, scheduled for tonight, is canceled. The next meeting of the Planning Commission will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Municipal Building, 490 Kunkletown Road, Kunkletown.

Meeting tonight

The American Legion Auxiliary, Post 927, is slated to meet at 7 p.m. today at the Legion building in Gilbert. Guests are welcome.

Polk meeting

The board of supervisors for Polk Township is scheduled for a general meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday at the municipal building in Kresgeville.

WELL meeting

The West End Little League Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville. It is a closed meeting. The open, or public, meeting is next week, same time, same place.

Cleaning time

Post 927, American Legion, Gilbert, will hold its weekly cleanup time from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Lend a hand for repairs and routine maintenance. No experience needed, no tools required is part of the reminder to Post members and friends.

Pantry distribution

The West End Food Pantry, Kunkletown, has a distribution scheduled for Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon.

PVA Girlfriends

The Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church’s (Brodheadsville) Girlfriends Rise and Shine Breakfast and Bible Study is at 10 a.m. Saturday. Spaces are limited so those planning to go are reminded to sign up.

VBS schedules

Effort UMC will host a VBS closing ceremony 8:30 a.m. Sunday, with hopes for the youth and families to join the congregation at this service to share their songs of worship and scriptures learned at VBS.

St. Matthew’s UCC is holding its VBS from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday for children ages 3 to 12. A parent or adult may stay with 3- and 4-year-olds. The theme is Food Truck Party.

Our Lady Queen of Peace registration for its VBS, Mega Sports Camp, will close July 25.

The VBS will be held the week of Aug. 1 to Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., lunch included.

There is a cost.

Breakfast Social

Zion Lutheran church, Brodheadsville, is hosting a breakfast social from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, between the two worship services.

Come share good fellowship and food with members and friends of Zion is the invitation.

Current services are Saturdays at 5 p.m., Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

Masks are optional, but encouraged. If you are not feeling well or not able or comfortable attending in person, please explore these other options. The 8 a.m. service is broadcast via Zoom, the 10:30 a.m. service is broadcast via Facebook Live. A simple prerecorded spoken service is also available each week on Facebook.

Sunday school is on summer recess.

The church also offers rental of the parish hall for a party in air-conditioned comfort. Call the church at 570-992-6988 for availability, pricing and a tour.

Open house

The West End Volunteer Fire Company is holding a community open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 128 Route 715 (behind Wawa), in Brodheadsville. Admission is free.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Activities for kids and adults include: tour the firetrucks, meet a firefighter, Search and rescue teams will be present along with County EMA, 911 dispatchers, sheriff’s department, and much more.

Kids can participate in various safety/resource stations and earn a prize if they complete all stations.

Pancake breakfast

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 839 of Sciota extends a community invitation to its monthly pancake breakfast, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, rain or shine, at the hangar, 222 Hickory Lane, Saylorsburg (turn off Route 209 at Millers Flower Shop by Kate).

The breakfast features all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice, pastries and coffee. A giant striped tent provides shade and ambience for breakfast diners as they are surrounded by private aircraft and Corvettes.

The Allentown Area Corvette Club will display their prized sports cars Additionally, the pilots of EAA 839 will offer free Young Eagle flights to youth ages 7-17. (Parental release forms are required).

Communion held

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, will celebrate Holy Communion at its 9:30 a.m. worship service this coming Sunday.

Grape juice and gluten-free wafers are available.

Valor run

On Sunday, an open to community event, the annual Valor/Resilient Warrior Rick Murphy Run and barbecue will be held beginning and ending at Paul’s House in Kunkletown.

Registration is from noon to 1:30 p.m., with a specific requested donation for riders and passengers. Departures are open.

There will be five stops along the route to test the participants’ scavenger skills. Each correct hunt answer will net a recognition.

There will be a family friendly party at 2 p.m. There is a cost.

In addition, there will be a prize for the best scavenger, a raffle and a Valor swag for sale to support the foundation.

Women’s Group

The Western Pocono Women’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Effort UMC.

The program will be by Claudia Hill on creativity with gourds.

Members are asked to bring dog or cat food, which will be donated to Meals on Wheels clients with pets.

The group anticipates its new cookbook being available at the club’s stand at the West End Fair, Aug. 21-27

Shawl ministry

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry members will be busying their respective hands from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Free meetings

McMichaels UMC offers two free meetings weekly for those needing support.

AA meets at the church every Wednesday at noon and every Saturday evening at 6:30. The meeting is free, confidential, and led by a professional.

Serenity Narcotics Anonymous meets every Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the church. The meeting is open to all who want to participate and seek the help you need to assist you in your recovery. The meeting is free and confidential and led by a professional.

Blood drive held

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting a Red Cross community blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Those interested in donating are asked to call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800- 733-2767) or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter: West End to schedule an appointment. One can streamline one’s donation experience and save up to 15 minutes by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass to complete one’s pre-donation reading and health history questions on the day of one’s appointment.

Items needed

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC is asking for donations of canned vegetables for its in-need families.

Free dinner

Next Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m., Zion Lutheran offers a drive-thru free meal for pickup.

Eldred meeting

The Eldred Township Board of Supervisors is slated to meet at 7 p.m. July 20 at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

Effort UMC event

The church family picnic is returning to Effort UMC on July 31, after the 11 a.m. service, after two years of not being able to be held.

Registered attendance is due before July 25.

Spaghetti dinner

Effort UMC has announced holding a dinner from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 13, either eat-in or takeout. The church is air-conditioned and handicap accessible.

Dinner will include spaghetti, with marinara or meat sauce (sausage or beef) or clam sauce, tossed salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverage.

Youth Field Day

Registration for the Monroe County Youth Field Day is now open. This community-sponsored event is slated to be held at Camp Trexler in Jonas on Sept. 10.
