Anthracite/Towamensing wins title
Sammy Wolfe allowed a hit to the game’s leadoff batter.
She was nearly perfect after that - and she had to be.
Wolfe tossed a one-hitter, striking out nine and not walking a batter. Her dominating performance helped Anthracite/Towamensing defeat Warrington, 2-1, and capture the Section 6 Girls Softball 10-12 year-old Little League championship.
“It was just an unreal pitching performance from Sammy,” said Anthracite/Towamensing manager Tommy Goida. “That was a really good hitting team she shut down tonight.
“Sammy got ahead in the count, moved the ball around and changed speeds. She was in complete control.”
Against a Warrington team that had scored 14 and 9 runs in its two previous Section 6 playoff games, Wolfe allowed just one ball out of the infield - Ellie Harper’s line drive single to center to open the game.
Harper then stole a pair of bases and scored on a wild pitch to give Warrington an early 1-0 lead.
From that point on, Wolfe was unhittable. The only other Warrington baserunner in the game came on an infield error in the fourth inning.
“The early run they scored didn’t bother me,” Wolfe said. “I just try to stay calm and pitch my game. My control is one of my strengths so I try to take advantage of that by moving my pitches up and down, and inside and outside. I was happy with my location tonight.”
Wolfe said she didn’t feel any extra pressure as the zeros started to pile up in the scoreboard.
“I was confident our offense was eventually going to get something going, so I just tried to do my job until that happened,” she said.
That finally happened in the fourth inning.
With two outs and no one on base and Anthracite/Towamensing having just one hit in the game up to that point, Brooklyn Mika lined a shot to center that went off the outfielder’s glove, allowing her to reach second base. Riley Lawless tied the game with an RBI single to left and raced all the way to third as Warrington tried unsuccessfully to get Mika at the plate. Janessa Prudente followed with a blast to fence in rightcenter that went for an RBI double and a 2-1 A/T lead.
“We weren’t doing much offensively up until that point, but we have really good hitters up and down our lineup so I was confident that we would eventually bust out,” Goida said. “All three girls - Brooklyn, Riley and Janessa - hit the ball hard. They have all been really good the entire postseason and they came through when we needed it tonight.”
With the lead for the first time in the game, Wolfe went out and retired the final six Warrinton batters in order - three of them on strike outs - to touch off an Anthracite/Towamensing celebration.
“This group of girls has been so much fun to coach,” Goida said. “It’s just a great team. They come to practice and work hard, everyone pulls for one another, it’s been tremendous - and we aren’t finished yet.
“We’ve won District 18 and Section 6 titles and now we move on to States. We hope to just keep things rolling next week.”
D’ANCONA DEFENSE ... Anthracite/Towamensing first baseman Isabella D’Ancona put on a dazzling display in the field. D’Ancona had eight put outs in the game, including snaring one line drive, making three unassisted outs after fielding grounders, and catching three fly balls in foul territory. On one of the fly balls, she made a difficult grab right in front of the fence. “Isabella made some great plays for us tonight,” Goida said. “She caught everything that came her way - and there were a lot of balls hit her way tonight.”
PITCHING DUEL ... Wolfe and Warrington’s Hannah Pincus were both outstanding in the circle. Pincus allowed just three hits and struck out 10. Neither pitcher walked a batter in the briskly played contest that lasted just 59 minutes.
LAWLESS-NESS ... Lawless had two of A/T’s three hits, scored a run, knocked in a run, and also stole a base.
INDIANA-BOUND ... Anthracite/Towamensing will advance to the eight-team double elimination State Tournament to be held July 13-19 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. A/T will face the Section 8 champion in the tournament’s opening game on Wednesday, July 13 at 5 p.m.
