Tamaqua girl starts jewelry business
The 9-year-old daughter of the owner of Stoker’s Brewing Company in Tamaqua has started her own jewelry business.
Only Kiana Menconi Drost’s venture, Kiana’s Kreations, is for the dogs - and the cats, and all the other animals waiting for homes at local animal shelters.
“I want to raise some money to buy pet food for local animal shelters,” Kiana explained.
Her unique rubber band creations are available from her father’s 36 Mauch Chunk St. business.
“I started making jewelry last year when my dad bought me a jewelry kit but now I braid them all by hand,” Kiana explained.
She’ll be selling rings for a $1 donation; children’s bracelets for $2 and adult bracelets/anklets for $3. She chose red, white and blue bands for her first offerings because of the Independence Day holiday.
“(I want to buy pet food) because I love all animals and all animals need homes because they don’t deserve to sit there in a pet cage,” Kiana said.
The brewery will also accept pet food donations.
Kiana is no stranger to animals. She has three goldfish, four hermit crabs and a dog who once lived at a shelter.
“My dog, Lani, will be 6 years old this October and I’m very excited for her,” Kiana said.
She’s enthusiastic about the donations she might collect.
“I feel happy and excited,” to know homeless animals will benefit, Kiana said. “I feel good caring for the animals that would have no homes if the shelters didn’t save them.”
Her father, Doug Drost, who Kiana said “makes the beer” at Stoker’s, noted that she came up with the business name and designed her own logo.
She plans to keep the business running.
“I want to continue making more jewelry out of rubber bands. I also like to collect gems and maybe someday I’ll make jewelry with them, too,” Kiana said.
