West End news for July 6, 2022

Seniors menu

The West End Seniors who attend or plan to attend the Chestnuthill Senior Center, held at Zion Lutheran Church, can place an order for lunch by 11 a.m. the day before attending with center manager Donna Riedel at 570-242-6770.

Friday’s planned meal is baked ziti. Next Wednesday’s is chicken and broccoli fettuccine Alfredo.

Meals benefit

A car show and tricky tray to benefit Meals on Wheels of Monroe County will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 23, at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert.

The first 50 cars that preregister by July 8, will get a goodie bag with a free event T-shirt, dash plaque and other items.

Admittance is free for spectators, but they are asked to bring a donation of pet items, personal hygiene products, feminine products, toilet paper, paper towels or anything nonfood related.

Vendor spaces are available for a cost, with that cost going up after July 8.

In case of inclement weather, the show will be moved to July 24.

Post meeting

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, “A” members monthly meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Guests are welcome, but only “A” members can vote on motioned items.

Pantry open

The Effort UMC food pantry, aka the Supplemental Food Resource Center, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Legion birthday

Saturday, from 3 to 9:30 p.m., there will be a twofold birthday celebration at the Legion Post 927 in Gilbert. It is an open-to-community event.

Celebrated will be the Legion’s 103 birthday and Post 927’s 75th birthday.

There will be food, games, face painting, tricky tray, vendors and fireworks.

There is a cost, with one price for an advance ticket and a higher price at the gate.

Parish event

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate its Parish Feast Day, the Feast of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, on Sunday after the 11 a.m. Mass.

The Knights of Columbus will carry the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary out of the doors of the church to the pavilion. Parishioners are invited to bring a statue or framed image of the Blessed Mother to carry in the procession.

A parish family picnic will follow. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided, along with water.

Church family members are invited to bring along a side dish or dessert for sharing as well as a lawn chair for sitting.

At 3 p.m. the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be carried back into the church as the beginning of the Spanish Mass is at 3 p.m.

Riders meet

American Legion Post 927 Riders will have a monthly chapter meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Polk services

The Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company responded to 16 emergencies, giving the company a year-to-date total of 110 emergency responses. Volunteers logged 105 training hours and 284 fundraising hours.

July will bring more of the same, and the Polk volunteers are accepting applications for all positions. Stop by the Kresgeville station any Monday night or call 610-681-4370 and press 2 to leave a message for the fire chief.

Organist needed

St. John’s Lutheran Church is in need of a church organist and choir director.

Anyone interested, or knowing of someone who might be, can call the church at 570-629-4309 and leave a message.

Bugfest ahead

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center will celebrate Bugfest 2022, an annual festival, for two sessions, on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon or the afternoon session from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Bugfest is a celebration of insects and great fun for families with children ages 4 to 12. Entrants from the Bugfest Art Contest will be on display throughout the month of July but winners will be awarded at noon during the Bugfest event. Families are invited to come out and have some buggy fun with live critters, displays, games and take-home crafts all about our six-legged friends. Activities include insect safaris, a butterfly tent, live insects, insect collections, painting with maggots and games.

Preregistration is required and limited. There is a cost. Children can come dressed as their favorite bug and receive a discount on admission price. Parents can attend for free.

Christmas in July

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is hosting a Christmas in July event on Sunday, in front of Faith Garden at the church, following the worship service at 10:30 a.m., beginning at 11 a.m.

There is fun planned for all, including crafts, making cards for pastor’s home visits, and outdoor games.

Participants are asked to bring lawn chairs or a blanket as well as a bag lunch. Refreshments will be supplied.

If able to, attendees are asked to bring school supplies for the PVEN.

VBS begins

Effort UMC is beginning its VBS this Sunday through Friday, with classes being held primarily in the evening. The closing ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. July 17, with hopes for the youth and families to join the congregation at this service to share their songs of worship and Scriptures learned during the past week.

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is holding its VBS from July 18-22.

Two meetings

St. John’s Lutheran Church Ladies Auxiliary, Effort, will meet on Monday, with ziti provided for lunch. All women of St. John’s are welcome. The group continues to collect nonperishables for the PVEN and Valor.

The church’s council will also meet on Monday at 1 p.m.

The church has donated funds to Meals on Wheels, as the result of a special fund in April and a similar fund, plus the church’s tip jar at last year’s West End Fair stand, to Ukraine totaling over $500.

That tip jar can be filled again during the West End Fair, which runs from Aug. 21-26.

Jam time hosted

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg is slated to have its next jam session at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

One may come to join the merry music makers or listen.

Knit & crochet

Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet group will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Helpers and visitors wanting to learn how to knit or crochet are invited as well as those experienced.

Touch of Home

Operation: Touch of Home will be meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the American Legion Post Home on Route 209, Gilbert.

Open house

The West End Fire Company, Brodheadsville, will be holding a community open house from noon to 4 p.m. July 16 at 128 Route 715 (behind Wawa), Brodheadsville.

Admission is free.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. There will be activities for children and adults.

One will be able to tour the firetrucks, meet a firefighter and Search and Rescue teams will be present along with the county EMA, 911 dispatchers, sheriff’s department, and much more.

Children can participate in various safety/resource stations and earn a prize if they complete all stations.

Breakfast ahead

The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 839 of Sciota invites the community to participate in their monthly pancake breakfast July 17.

The breakfast features all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice, pastries and coffee. There is a cost.

A giant striped tent provides shade and ambience for breakfast diners as they are surrounded by private aircraft and Corvettes.

The Allentown Area Corvette Club will display their prized sports cars, Additionally, the pilots of EAA 839 will offer free Young Eagle flights to youth ages 7-17. Parental release forms are required. The pancake breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, at the hangar, 222 Hickory Lane, Saylorsburg (turn off Route 209 at Millers Flower Shop by Kate).
