A standoff in Monroe County Thursday night ended in the fatal shooting of the suspect by state troopers.
State police at Fern Ridge said at 8:04 p.m. Isabell Carroll, 57, of 510 High Point Drive, in Jackson Township, made a 911 call stating that her husband, Keith Carroll, 59, was depressed and had locked himself in a bedroom, threatening to kill himself, along with shooting at police. She said her husband was armed with a pistol.
Troopers responded to the scene and were able to speak with Carroll, who continued to make threats to himself and responding police. Troopers said Carroll appeared to be intoxicated and was slurring his words while on the phone. As the conversation continued Carroll continued to state he was armed with a 9 mm pistol and made threats toward law enforcement.
Troopers from the Stroudsburg barracks were also dispatched to the scene to assist Fern Ridge officers.
Troopers established a perimeter around the residence, which is located within a neighborhood and nearby residences. During the course of the incident corporals from Fern Ridge and Stroudsburg arrived on scene and requested the state police special emergency response unit to respond.
Negotiations continued with Carroll but were unsuccessful.
At about 10:06 p.m. Carroll came out the front door of the residence armed with a pistol. Troopers then fired their weapons, striking Carroll. A short time later he was pronounced dead.
State police Troop N Major Case Team was activated to conduct the investigation. The Monroe County District Attorney’s office and State Police Internal Affairs Division-East, were notified.
State police said that Cpl. Christopher Tomlinson, of the Bloomsburg barracks criminal investigation unit, is the lead investigator.
