Eldred hires public works supervisor

Eldred Township has hired a new public works supervisor.

The township supervisors approved hiring Jonathan Gula at their meeting on June 15. Gula then started his new job on Monday. Prior to that, he worked for Lehigh Township for 14 years.

“He seems very well-versed,” said Gary Hoffman, the chairman of the supervisors.

Gula is replacing Frank Fehlinger, who resigned in April. Supervisor Blaine Silfies has been filling in as roadmaster since May 16.

“I want to publicly thank Blaine for taking on the duty,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman said that he and Supervisor Scott Clark both have full-time jobs and were not able to help with the Public Works Department.

Silfies said, “I gotta give the guys downstairs credit. They’ve done everything I’ve asked in a timely manner. … Thank you, guys.”

Gula will be full time and paid $31 per hour. The position comes with full benefits.

In other business, the supervisors declared three buildings as being dangerous structures. Two of them are on Gower Road and one is on Correll Road. The buildings were found to be unsafe during a zoning enforcement inspection.

The township solicitor Michael Gaul said he will issue a notice to the property owners that their buildings have been declared dangerous. They will be asked to remediate the situation, which could include the demolition of the structures.

The township has also accepted the bid from Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction for material for road patching and repair. The township does not plan to do any blacktopping this year, but this could change.

Also in construction, the roof of the Eldred Township Community Center was successfully repaired. The work was done by Bernard and Sons Roofing Co.

Silfies said they thought there were four leaks in the roof, but it turned out there were three. The fourth leak was actually a valve that is going to be replaced.

“Thank you for your persistence,” Hoffman said to Silfies.
