Nesquehoning crews knock down blaze, remind people to check smoke detectors

Nesquehoning fire companies are reminding residents about the need of working smoke detectors after an early morning fire in the borough that had the potential to become deadly due to no smoke detectors.

John McArdle, Nesquehoning Hose Company fire chief, said the incident happened at 2:54 a.m. Wednesday along the unit block of East Catawissa Street.

Nesquehoning, Lansford and Jim Thorpe fire companies, as well as Lehighton Ambulance responded to the reported dwelling fire.

When crews arrived, they found a porch on a home was on fire and blocking the primary exit to the residence. Crews were able to knock down the fire quickly.

Firefighters forced entry into the home and conducted a search, finding two residents who were unaware of the fire.

There was moderate smoke conditions throughout the home. The occupants were evaluated by Lehighton Ambulance.

McArdle said that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

He, along with the fire company, remind residents to “make sure that you have working smoke detectors in your home. It is recommended that they be in every bedroom, and on every floor, to alert anyone of a potential fire.”
