Polk meeting

The Board of Supervisors for Polk Township will meet for a general meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Concert today

Saylorsburg Blue Ridge Flea Market is the site for a concert as hosted by the Sherman Theater. Gates open at 6 p.m. for season passholders and members and at 6:15 for the public. The music starts at 7:30 p.m.

The B Street Band will present a Tribute to Bruce Springsteen.

Study begins

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, will begin the second half of its Bible study, Twelve Women of the Bible, at 7 p.m. today. The first half was done last summer with the remaining women: Eve, Rebekah, Hannah, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary of Bethany and the woman at the well, to be done now.

Thursday event

The Western Pocono Community Library will be hosting author Carol Cooper from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, for a speaking and signing event.

Carol will be speaking about losing a child to overdose and will have copies of her book, “Knock Knock, It’s Me, Mom: The Awakening of My Spirituality After Losing an Only Child,” available for purchase.

Seniors menu

The Chestnuthill Senior Center, at Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, is happening on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Qualifying seniors wishing to eat lunch there must make a meal reservation one day in advance by 11 a.m. with Manager Donna Riedel. She can be reached at 570-242-6770.

Friday’s meal is pasta primavera, and next Wednesday’s is stuffed chicken breast.

Breakfast held

There will be a donation-only breakfast at McMichaels UMC on Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m.

A complete breakfast will be served along with a beverage. Everyone is welcome. One may eat indoors or take out.

July’s breakfast will be on July 9, at the same time.

The church’s worship services are currently outdoors, weather permitting. One may stay in one’s car or have a seat that is provided in the great outdoors.

In addition, the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service is on Facebook every week.

For the in-person worshippers, cake or doughnuts and a beverage are available after the service.

The church also hosts an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting every Wednesday at noon and every Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Those in need of such services are invited to join one of these meetings and receive the help they are seeking. There will be others present who understand. The meeting, which is free and confidential, is held by a professional.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

Distribution of food is being limited to drive-up/pickup service only.

Saturday walk

Monroe County Conservation District’s Environmental Education Center offers a Saturday walk in the Tannersville Cranberry Bog, beginning at 2 p.m. Along the way, Environmental Educators will explain the bog’s formation, its interesting plant and animal life, and the role the local Preserve Committee and the Nature Conservancy play in its continued protection.

There is a cost per person and preregistration is required.

Fellowship event

The final fellowship breakfast at Effort UMC until September will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. this Sunday.

A total yumfest breakfast is promised. It is the last breakfast until September as there are no breakfasts scheduled in July and August.

Summer reading

The Western Pocono Community Reading Program returns Sunday. The theme is Oceans of Possibilities. It will continue through July 28. Participants must register. Visit the WPCL Circulation Desk or www.westernpoconocommunitylibrary.org to register.

Grads honored

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Kresgeville, will honor its graduates at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday. From 11:30 to 1:30 p.m., the church will celebrate Family & Youth Fun Day.

Next Sunday there will be Holy Communion at both the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. services and honoring all fathers and those who give fatherly care.

AL Riders meet

The American Legion Riders of Post 927 will hold its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Breakfast time

It’s an all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 839 of Sciota and being served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the airport hangar on Hickory Lane, for which one must turn off Route 209 at Millers Flower Shop by Kate.

That breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee for a set fee.

A giant striped tent provides shade and ambience for breakfast diners as they are surrounded by private aircraft and beautifully maintained Mazda Miatas: The Lehigh Valley Miata Owners Club will display their prized convertibles. Additionally, the pilots of EAA 839 will offer free Young Eagle flights to young people ages 7-17. Parental release forms are required.

Guest preacher

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church will welcome Craig Laubach into the pulpit as guest preacher Sunday. All are invited to hear his inspiring message in the church sanctuary at 10 a.m. or watch it via Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/petersumc.saylorsburg.

Riders meeting

The American Legion Riders monthly meeting is at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

New startup

An informative meeting for restart of the Youth Group at Effort UMC will be held on Sunday after the 11 a.m. service. This is a chance for the parents and youth to meet the leaders and youth and review the guidelines, policies and upcoming events. Refreshments will be available.

Family Fun Day

On Sunday, beginning at 11:30 a.m., at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, on Trach Road, in Kresgeville, there will be a Family and Youth fun day: Taking Care of God’s Creation.

It will include decorating bird houses, games and pizza.

Those planning to attend are asked to call the church office at 610-681-5191 so enough supplies will be on hand.

Ladies Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary of St. John’s Lutheran Church will be meeting at noon on Monday. Attendees are reminded to bring lunch.

All women of St. John’s are welcome to attend. Nonperishable foods for PVEN and Valor continue to be collected.

WGOE meeting

The Women’s Group of Effort will be meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Effort UMC. Devotions will be provided by Dee Juris. The program for this meeting will be a business meeting and the planning of the church family picnic.

Bingo time

The American Legion in Gilbert continues to host bingo night each Monday. Doors open for card sales at 6:30 p.m. Calling begins a half hour later.

Registration asked

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is now accepting registration for children to be in class for the 2022-2023 school year until Aug. 1 so records will be current.

One may do so via forms available, including costs, on the church website or through the church office.

Sunday religious education classes begin at 9 a.m. or immediately following the 8 a.m. Mass until 10:30 a.m.

Flag Day celebrated

Tuesday, June 14, is the time to celebrate Flag Day. The American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will hold a Flag Day ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. The public is invited.

Boy Scout Troop 102 and Cub Pack 102 will offer proper U.S. flag disposal.

OTH meeting

Operation Touch of Home will hold a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion in Gilbert.

Hazardous Waste

From the county’s Waste Authority comes word of a collection date for household hazardous waste, for Monroe County residents only, courtesy of Eldred Township’s municipal office.

The collection date for gasoline, antifreeze, motor oil, oil-based paint, insecticides, pool chemicals, fire extinguishers and more is next June 15, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Military Road site in Stroudsburg.

One must register and pay before arriving and make an appointment.

Additional collection dates over the summer include: July 13, July 20, July 23, Aug. 10, Aug. 24 and Sept. 21.

Historical society

The Chestnuthill Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. June 15 at the township Park Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.
