Police release details in fatal crash in Penn Forest

State police at Lehighton just released details of a fatal motorcycle crash on May 25.

A Carbon County driver was killed and his young passenger seriously injured in the crash at 5:55 p.m. along Piney Woods Drive in Penn Forest Township.

Troopers said James T. Johnson, 38, of Jim Thorpe, was operating a 2000 Yamaha bike southbound with an 11-year-old female passenger when he failed to negotiate a right hand curve in the road. The bike went onto the east berm, crossed a driveway and then struck a tree in a yard at 36 Piney Wood Drive. Troopers said Johnson was thrown from the bike and struck the tree head first. He died shortly after being taken to St. Luke’s Carbon Campus, Franklin Township.

The young passenger was taken to a landing area where a medical helicopter flew her to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. She was later transported to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She was initially admitted in critical condition, troopers said.
