Free summer music series begins in Lansford

It was like the “Opry” came to Kennedy Park in Lansford on Sunday night.

The Rehrig Brothers, who sing classic country music, performed in the first of a series of “Music In The Park” events, sponsored by Lansford Alive and Lansford Community Bank.

Each Sunday night through Aug. 28, there are free music concerts in the gazebo.

Lansford Alive member Robert Dobosh said at least 225 people attended The Rehrig Brothers show.

The Rehrig Brothers consist of Dave Rehrig on vocals, Dennis Rehrig on steel guitar and Dean Rehrig on keyboard.

Dave said he has been singing and performing for 53 years, going back to when his father was still living.

Although the Rehrigs sing an array of cover tunes, it’s Dave’s tribute to the late Conway Twitty that is always a highlight.

His Twitty hits included “Hello Darlin’,” “Slow Hand,” “Love to Lay You Down,” “Fifteen Years Ago” and “You’ve Never Been This Far Before.”

This is the second year The Rehrig Brothers played at the Lansford Park series, which is now in its ninth year.

Beth Seymour, also a Lansford Alive co-chairman, said she loved the Conway Twitty portion.

“He sounds just like Conway Twitty,” she said.

Dave Rehrig said it happens that Sunday’s show marked the 29th anniversary of Twitty’s death. Twitty had died suddenly at age 59 after collapsing on his tour bus from an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The Rehrig Brothers sang covers from Alan Jackson (“It Must Be Love”), Merle Haggard (“Okie From Muskogee”), Johnny Cash (“Folsom Prison Blues”), George Jones (“He Stopped Loving Her Today”) and even Elvis Presley (“Return To Sender”).

Next Sunday, the Lansford concert series will feature The McGeehan Duo, a father-daughter combo from Hometown who will be singing Top 40, classic rock and ’50s and ’60s music. The concerts are free (a donation is accepted) and held from 6-8 p.m.

Ondrus said money raised is used for Kennedy Park improvements. Proceeds from last year purchased six park benches.

In addition, repairs are routinely made to the gazebo because of continuous vandalism.

About 250 people attended Music in the Park, staged by Lansford Alive, Sunday in Lansford's Kennedy Park. The entertainment was by The Rehrig Brothers, who sang classic country. Some couples could even be seen dancing to some of the numbers. RON GOWER/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
