Health care expands in Carbon

A new health care facility in Carbon County has firmly put down its roots and intends to open later this week.

Lehigh Valley Health Network cut the ribbon to welcome Lehigh Valley Hospital - Carbon in Mahoning Township on Monday afternoon.

Brian Nestor, LVHN President and Chief Executive Officer, told the impressive turnout in attendance this is their hospital in their very own neighborhood.

“We’ve been wanting this for so darn long,” Nestor said. “Did it come out nice or what?

Nestor added, “at LVHN, we firmly believe ‘your health deserves a partner.’?”

Terry Purcell, president, LVHN Northwest Region, said the $78 million, 100,578-square-foot campus on Route 443 is home to a full-service community hospital.

“We listened to the community,” Purcell said. “Our response is what you see here today … a beautiful new hospital and health center, and the opportunity for even more programs and services to come.”

Purcell noted the hospital is built not just for today but for expansion in the future, and added the goal is to make it more convenient and accessible.

LVH-Carbon President Christine Biege said, “Great health care involves more than brick and mortar, the latest technology, or access to services and specialists.”

“Great health care starts with people,” Biege said. “Our pledge is that you will find exceptional health care here at LVH-Carbon.”

Lawrence Riddles, Regional Chief Medical Officer, LVHN, said, “Throughout my travels, I have seen many hospitals and medical facilities.

“This place ranks up there with the best,” Riddles said. “This new hospital is just what the doctor ordered for Carbon County.”

State Rep. Doyle Heffley said it’s great that so many employees who live in Carbon County have the opportunity to work at a hospital that’s in their backyard.

The campus has 17 different specialty offices with a variety of services, including cardiology, oncology and ear nose and throat among them.

The hospital will have 20 inpatient and 16 emergency room beds.

It has two operating rooms, and will eventually have four. There are also two procedure rooms.

Other services include complete telemedicine services; heart institute; cancer institute; institute for surgical excellence and imaging services.

Attached to the hospital is a medical office building where patients can visit their practitioner or access other LVHN services.

The health center will feature outpatient rehab; cardiac rehab; pharmacy; infusion center; and LVPG/Coordinated Health.

There are LVPG providers, with orthopedic surgeons; OB/GYN; general surgeon; colorectal surgeon; cardiology; ENT (Ear, nose, throat); physiatry; rheumatology; and pain management.

The hospital will be fully staffed, and they will supplement staff with members who are employees from Cedar Crest.

On the first day the hospital opens, it will have 17 infusion patients being cared for at their cancer institute scheduled for treatments.

The hospital will open following final inspection by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
