Palmerton falls in 3A title game
ALLENTOWN - Good pitching often beats good hitting.
And Palisades definitely has a good pitcher.
Freshman Karlye Teman - who threw a two-hit shutout against Palmerton during the regular season - did it again on Wednesday at Pates Park in the District 11 Class 3A championship game.
Teman struck out 16 batters, and only allowed one runner past second base, to lead the fourth-seeded Pirates to an 8-0 victory and the team’s first district title since 2010.
“Obviously, she’s a very good pitcher who definitely matured throughout the season,” said Blue Bomber head coach Bob Hock. “She has really come into her own ... She just throws the ball hard, maybe one of the quickest we’ve seen all year. We’ve hit some good pitchers this year, but she’s tough.
“She’s got something a little extra special going on right now. All the credit to her for shutting down some good hitters today.”
Palmerton, the No. 3 seed, managed just singles by Cadee Munjone in the fourth inning and Kaylee Strohl in the seventh. Munjone and Strohl also worked walks, as did Kelsey Balliet and Madalynn Moyer.
“She was pretty tough,” said Strohl. “She’s a great player ... It was tough to get on it, but we eventually started to get around on it, just not soon enough.”
Palisades - which only won three games last season - had its bats working early.
Rhiley Poniktera singled home Bri Hunter, who also singled, in the second inning to give the fourth-seeded Pirates a 1-0 advantage. After an error to open the third inning, Palisades tacked on two more runs thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ashley Amato, and a run-scoring double by Hunter.
“It was super important for us to go up early, but to be able to keep adding to (the lead) was huge,” said winning coach Jill Amato, whose team defeated Palmerton 1-0 on May 4. “Last time (against the Bombers), we got that first run early in the game, and we just couldn’t do anything else beside that.
“Our players have just grown so much with hitting the last couple weeks, so going into these hard games and facing great pitching, we’ve been working super hard at practice on inside, outside, stuff like that, so that they can come through against these tougher pitchers.”
The practice more than payed off, as the hits kept coming for the Pirates (15-7).
Back-to-back doubles by Ava Paglianite and Allie Wenskoski in the fifth upped the score to 4-0, which must have seemed more like 40-0 with Teman in the circle.
“We knew where she throws and how she likes to throw and we worked on it, but when people are very good at their skill, it’s tough to combat that,” said Hock. “We thought we were ready, but obviously not.
Palisades put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, scoring four more times to double the lead. Amato had the biggest blow of the frame, delivering a three-run double to right-center.
“My teammates have my back the whole time,” said Teman. “And they really hit the ball well today. All of my pitches were really working for me. I was hitting all my spots.
“This feels really good because we’ve been working together from the beginning of the season for this. We wanted this so bad.”
ONLY SCORING THREATS ... Every Palmerton threat ended with Teman registering a strikeout. Strohl walked and stole second in the third, but the inning ended with a strikeout. Balliet walked with two outs in the fourth and Munjone followed with the Bombers’ first hit, but Teman fanned the next better. Two walks and a hit loaded the bases in the seventh, but the final out was recorded on a swinging strike.
SPEAKING OF STRIKEOUTS ... Teman, who threw 105 pitches (68 for strikes), entered the game with 245 strikeouts this season.
NEXT UP ... Both Palisades and Palmerton (15-9) have qualified for the state playoffs, which begin Monday. The Bombers will face District 12 champion Philadelphia Academy Charter.
