Lansford music in park program to begin 9th year

The Lansford Alive Committee’s “Music in the Park” program will kick off its ninth year this Sunday.

The concerts will be held in the John F. Kennedy Park at the gazebo located at the west end of the borough, next to the Panther Valley School District stadium. Each concert will run from 6 to 8 p.m.

The concerts run June 5 through Aug. 28 with admission free and refreshments sold.

All proceeds from the refreshment stand will benefit the revitalization of the park.

The concert series is a fundraising activity of the Lansford Alive Committee, which is a nonprofit, all-volunteer charitable organization dedicated to the sole purpose of helping the community with the improvement and the beautification of the park.

Marie Ondrus is chairman of the committee assisted by Beth Seymour, as co-chairman, and members Theresea Papay and Mary Bittle.

The concert series was the idea of the late Irma Leibensperger and Marie Ondrus.

A plaque was purchased by the committee last fall and was installed behind the gazebo in memory of Leibensperger, who passed away two years ago.

Since 2014 the committee has used funds from the concession stand, private and public donations as well as funding from the borough to make numerous improvements in the park.

Some of the projects completed included: the 40-year-old coal miners monument was renovated and refurbished back to its original beauty and stature, as a symbol of the heritage of the local coal mines; restored the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company coal car back to its original form with the help of the students from the Carbon Career and Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe; recently purchased six brand-new park benches in order to increase the seating attendance and provide comfort to the concert spectators.

Future projects include purchasing additional park benches.

Public support is vital to the program enabling the committee to make improvements to the park. Those attending the concerts are reminded to bring a lawn chair or a blanket for their comfort.
