Walnutport remembers the fallen on Memorial Day
It was a day of remembrance at the annual Memorial Day Service at the Walnutport Veterans Memorial on Monday.
Members of the R.W. Fritzinger VFW Post 7215 and Auxiliary held a ceremony to replace all the flags and the flowers at the monument.
Karen Bandzi, Walnutport VFW Auxiliary president, led the effort to remove the old flags and place new ones, from the small flags in front of the monument to the American flag, the Pennsylvania state flag, and the POW/MIA flag on the larger flagpoles.
VFW Commander Bruce Jones and Senior Vice Commander Stephen Mattai helped.
Junior Vice Commander Gerry Healey spoke about those who lost their lives serving their country.
“The men and women we honor, they were ordinary human beings just like us. But what they accomplished was extraordinary. They answered the call to duty; thereby, giving us today and tomorrow. Throughout American history; from the patriots who fired the first shots in the American Revolution, to the forces deployed around the world today; America has been fortunate to rely on citizens who willingly serve, fight, and die for their country,” he said.
“From those who died in the American Revolution, up to those who perished in our most recent conflicts, more than a million have died in defense of our country. Together, these defenders for freedom sacrificed everything to give us the world to enjoy today.
“This Memorial Day, we honor all those ordinary people who ascended to extraordinary might taking the tools of war in the name of freedom. On this Memorial Day, we come face to face with the cost in human lives of the values that brought us here.”
