Carbon Co. to begin vote recount

Carbon County will begin the election recount for the highly contested Republican U.S. Senate race on June 1.

On Thursday, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich announced that the recount will begin at 9 a.m. on June 1 and must conclude by June 7; and be certified by June 8.

The recount is required because under Pennsylvania state law any statewide races need go to a recount if the margin between the top candidates is 0.5% or less. Unofficial results showed Mehmet Oz ahead of Dave McCormick by 902 votes, acting Pennsylvania Secretary of State Leigh Chapman told reporters Wednesday.

Lukasevich said that the elections bureau is organizing all the ballots, emptying them from the ballot boxes by polling place and preparing for the recount.

He noted that the ballots will be scanned on a different scanner from the ones used on election day. Likewise, provisionals, mail-ins and absentee ballots will also be scanned in using a different scanner from the one they had used on May 17.

This ensures a complete count.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that he feels Carbon was one of the lucky counties because there were no conflicts with dates signed or not signed.

He feels confident the recount results will be nearly 100 percent of the results cast during the primary.

All other election results will not be recounted and will be certified at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

If the unofficial results hold and Oz, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is declared the winner, he will face off against Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, the Democratic nominee, in the general election.
