A former Hobby Shop Building is no longer an option for a potential township building expansion in Franklin Township.
Supervisors announced at Tuesday’s board meeting that an executive meeting was held last week at the building at 903 Fairyland Road.
Township engineer Mike Tirpak, of Carbon Engineering, conducted a feasibility study on the former Hobby Shop Building and determined it isn’t worth repairing the building.
A scope of work listed work needed before the building could be demolished, such as asbestos inspection for removal, lead paint, pipes, underground and above ground storage tanks and chemical storage.
Last month, supervisors agreed to cash in the matured PLGIT CD from Third Coast Bank, Humble, Texas, in the amount of $248,623.
Rather than reinvest it, the board wants it to be placed in the township’s Capital Reserve PLGIT Fund so it can have easy access to the money.
The board has given some thought about a new building, or possibly adding on to the existing Hobby Shop.
The township started a building fund about 30 years ago with plans to build a new township building, and supervisors believe it has come to the point where the township needs to expand for the police department and its administration office meeting room.
Supervisors planned to have a feasibility study done to see if the Hobby Shop would be worth fixing up, and then expand the building from there for either administrative office space or police offices.
The previous board(s) of supervisors’ plan was for the Capital Reserve Building Funds be used to tear down the Hobby Shop and the current administration office, and rebuild a new police and administrative office.
