Holmes sets Moravian single-season record

Northwestern graduate Derek Holmes set a Moravian University single-season record for hits in a season in the Greyhounds’ last game of the season.

Holmes, a junior, collected an RBI single in the first inning against Scranton for his 68th hit of the season. That broke the tie he was in with David Zubia, who set the previous mark of 67 hits in 2012. Holmes added another hit during the 10-3 loss to establish a new record of 69.

For the season, the former Tiger led Moravian in batting average, hits, home runs, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. He was also tied for the team lead in doubles and finished second in RBIs.

Holmes went 69-for-150 at the plate for a .460 average. He scored 34 runs and knocked in 37. Fifteen of his hits went for doubles, and he also had a triple and four home runs. He walked 14 times and only struck out nine times. His slugging percentage was .653 and he finished with a .529 on-base percentage for an OPS of 1.182.

As a sophomore, Holmes was 27-for-83 (.325 average) with two doubles, a triple, 13 runs and 15 RBIs.

Another Northwestern grad, Nick Henry, also was on the Greyhound roster. The freshman played in 14 games and hit .179 (5-for-28). He also walked seven times to help produce a .343 on-base percentage.

Moravian ended the season with a record of 22-18.
