A military veterans food box program is gaining steam, officials said.
On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that the MilitaryShare Program is up to 180 veterans being served at two sites.
The MilitaryShare Program provides food boxes from Second Harvest Food Bank to any county veteran and their family and includes fresh produce, milk, eggs, meat and nonperishable foods. Veterans currently can pick up boxes in Lehighton and Weatherly.
Ahner said a third site that will serve another portion of the county is currently in the works.
The county joined the program in October 2020 with a site at the Lehighton American Legion Post 314 and now also operates from the Weatherly American Legion.
The MilitaryShare Program is operated through the Carbon County Veterans Council and made possible through Second Harvest, as well as the Pennsylvania Veterans Trust Fund and Subaru Foundation.
Christine LeClair, director of Veterans Affairs in Carbon County, also announced that there will be a sign-up for the MilitaryShare Program from 9 a.m. to noon on May 31 in the lobby of St. Luke’s-Carbon campus. The sign-ups will be part of a Veteran Resource Pop Up event her office is beginning.
During the event, veterans can pick up information on benefits available to them, sign up for the food box program and receive a free pass while supplies last to check out the hospital’s new gym.
LeClair added that resource pop ups will take place monthly.
