Bears win EPC girls lacrosse title

NORTHAMPTON - The Bush family is Pleasant Valley High School girls lacrosse.

Toni is the head coach. Alexandra and Devon are senior and freshman student-athletes on the team, respectively. Even Joe, the father, is the scorekeeper for the Bears.

Alexandra and Devon did their part on the field, combining for seven goals in helping lead third-seeded Pleasant Valley to another upset victory - defeating top seed Emmaus 11-9 Thursday evening in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game at Northampton’s Al Erdosy Stadium.

The postseason title is the program’s first since its PIAA inception in 2016.

“It’s a family affair,” said Toni Bush. “It hasn’t sunk in yet. This is like a dream of mine. I don’t want to get choked up here, but when we started this program my oldest was five. My goal was to see my girls play and to have them win a championship when one’s a freshman and the other’s a senior. You can’t beat this.”

Emmaus (17-3 overall, 8-1 EPC) had been the top team in the conference all season, its lone loss coming at the hands of the Bears (15-5; 7-2). Pleasant Valley did it again, this time on a bigger stage.

The way the Bears did it was their attacking style on offense, which led to numerous free-position opportunities, and winning a majority of the draw controls.

“The draw is something we usually dominate,” Alexandra Bush said. “We have Devon [Bush] and Brielle [McInaw] on the circle who are super-fast and able to get the ball out of the air, and my placement is usually pretty spot on. The draw control changes the way the game goes.”

McInaw scored all three of her goals on the free position, while the Bush sisters tallied three total on the mark.

The Bears scored the game’s opening goal and never trailed, taking a 7-5 lead into halftime.

They were ahead by four goals with under two minutes to play, but the Green Hornets made it close, scoring twice in under 50 seconds.

“We made mistakes,” said Coach Bush. “But I’m most proud of the way we were able to hang in there when things were tough. I’m so proud of our little team from the Poconos.”

Senior goalie Amanda Hayes finished with 10 saves overall, and did her best to keep her team ahead.

“It was the best game of her season, best of her career,” Coach Bush said. “Amanda was stellar tonight. I don’t know what else to say. I’m still in a state of shock.”

CAPITALIZING CHANCES ... Pleasant Valley held a 13-8 advantage on draw controls, and scored six of its 11 goals on free-position shots.

DOWN BUT AHEAD ... Emmaus outshot Pleasant Valley 20-15 overall, but the Bears took care of their chances when it mattered most on the scoreboard.

TOP SEED ... Pleasant Valley secured the top seed in next week’s District 11 Class 3A Tournament.

UNDERDOGS ... The Bears won both of their conference tournament games as the lower seed, upsetting second-seed Easton in the semifinals, before taking down No. 1 seed Emmaus in the final.
