LAHS students paint mural in Weissport
Members of the Lehighton Area High School Art Department certainly know how to leave an indelible impression.
First, they showcased their vast artistic talents when they painted a mural inside the Lehighton Police Department.
On Tuesday, members of the Lehighton Area High School Art Department have taken to the streets of Weissport to paint a mural under the bridge.
Local artist Ruth Bush, who assists with the Jacob’s Weissport Historical Society, said she coordinated the mural painting event in Weissport.
“Weissport’s never had a mural that we know of before,” Bush said. “We know the students, the teacher, do a great job, and it’s a good program.”
The wall was painted last year and Bush came back and sketched it Monday. Students started to paint around 8 a.m. Tuesday.
They painted a church, fort, old school, the bell from the school, a train, and a canal boat with mules.
Bush said they’d like to have it all done by the end of this month.
Lehighton Area High School art teacher Diane Micheletti said the project is a great way for the students to show off their supreme abilities.
“It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community,” Micheletti said. “They use their talent and leave their mark.”
Last month, members of the National Art Honor Society painted a mural on the back office wall inside the police department.
Seniors Madison Brown and Hailey Miller participated in the creation of both murals.
“It’s definitely something we can leave behind as we journey onto our own paths,” Miller said. “Take it with, and leave it behind as we go our own way.”
Funds from a grant courtesy of the Carbon County Community Foundation were used to complete the mural under the bridge.
