Stormwater management plan updated

Carbon County officials adopted a resolution regarding stormwater management plan renewals for three watersheds in the area.

On Thursday, the county commissioners adopted the resolution on Act 167 of 1978, which regulates land and water use for flood control and stormwater management. The watersheds covered under the resolution are Brodhead Creek, McMichael Creek Watershed and Tobyhanna Creek Watershed.

Kristina Heaney, district manager for the Monroe County Conservation District, was at the meeting to accept the resolution.

She pointed out that this affects mainly Monroe County, but a small portion of the Tobyhanna Creek moves through Kidder Township.

“We’ve been working with the watershed planning advisory committee for the last two and a half years, trying to put these plans together,” Heaney said. “We’re doing a straight renewal. This will comply with all federal and state and local stormwater standards and update to the most recent and modern approaches at looking at these watersheds.”

She pointed out that Tobyhanna Creek feeds into the Lehigh River; while Brodhead and McMichael creeks feed into the Delaware.

The plans now will help to protect public health and safety and prevent or mitigate any adverse impacts related to stormwater runoff through management efforts.

These plans were last updated in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
