Woman jailed after attacking trooper

A Luzerne County woman was jailed following an incident in Carbon County.

State police at Fern Ridge said the incident occurred at 3:32 p.m. on May 1 along Interstate 80 eastbound in Kidder Township. Troopers were conducting a traffic enforcement operation when a 2008 Subaru Impreza was stopped for going 80 mph in a 65 mph zone. Through an investigation, the troopers learned that the driver had an outstanding warrant for her arrest issued out of Luzerne County for failure to appear.

As troopers began to take the woman into custody her mother, identified as Ana Mena, 43, of Wilkes-Barre, got out of the car and aggressively approached the arresting trooper from behind. She was told to return to the vehicle but ignored the commands and hit the trooper in the chest. After initial contact was made a brief struggle ensued, with Mena actively resisting arrest.

Other troopers arrived on scene and assisted in taking her into custody.

She was charged with felony count of aggravated assault on law enforcement and misdemeanor counts of simple assault, resisting arrest, harassment and disorderly conduct. She was arraigned before a district judge and committed to the county prison in Nesquehoning after failing to post $25,000 bail.

She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 11 at 9:45 a.m. before District Judge Joseph Homanko of Weatherly.
