Local roundup: Results from May 4

The Northern Lehigh softball team clinched a District 11 playoff berth in dramatic fashion on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Northwestern posted softball and baseball victories, while Pleasant Valley’s girls’ lacrosse team also recorded a win.

In track and field action, both the Panther Valley girls and Weatherly boys earned a pair of victories.

SOFTBALL

No. Lehigh-So. Lehigh

Jordyn Hemingway’s two-run double in the ninth inning put Northern Lehigh ahead for good as part of an 8-5 victory over Southern Lehigh in Colonial League play.

Hemingway also homered in the fifth to break a 4-4 tie until Southern Lehigh scored on an error in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at five.

Kendall Heiney pitched five innings in relief for the Bulldogs (10-7) to pick up the victory. Arabella Heintzelman recorded three hits for Northern Lehigh. Hayley Thoder also knocked in a run with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

The Spartans drop to 13-3 with the loss.

Northwestern-Salisbury

Northwestern combined solid pitching with some timely hitting to cruise to a 14-1 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

The Tigers’ Brynn Balliet and Peyton Neumoyer combined to toss a two-hitter, as Balliet finished with five strikeouts and two walks, while Neumoyer struck out two and walked none. Balliet walked off with the pitching victory.

Morgan Farthing had the hot bat for the Tigers (13-3 overall; 12-2 CL), as she finished with two doubles and four RBIs. Marissa Christman (two singles, four RBIs) and Izabella Akelaitis (single, double, three RBIs) also has big games.

Palmerton-Palisades

Palisades edged Palmerton for a 1-0 Colonial League victory.

Karlye Teman recorded 12 strikeouts while surrendering just two hits for the Pirates. She also scored on a wild pitch in the fourth with what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Pitcher Carly Gaffney had six strikeouts for the Bombers (13-6 overall; 9-6 CL). Gaffney and Alyssa Silliman had Palmerton’s only hits.

Allie Wenskos was the lone Pirate (8-6; 7-6) to record a hit off of Gaffney in the second inning.

The Bombers had the bases loaded in the fifth inning, and put two runners on in the sixth, but couldn’t push across any runs.

Northwestern-Salisbury

Northwestern rolled to a 13-0 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

The middle of the Tigers (11-7, 11-5 CL) order went 8-for-14 at the plate. Benjamin Boyer went 3-for-4 with three singles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Robert Croneberger added two singles, a double and two runs scored, while cleanup hitter Dylan Witkowski contributed two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Jordan Tocci was 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI for the Falcons (8-9, 7-8).

Southern Lehigh’s Janssen Brown held Northern Lehigh to just two hits in a 3-1 Colonial League win.

Tyler Fenstermaker’s leadoff double in the second inning led to him scoring on a Spartans’ (15-2) error for the Bulldogs’ lone run of the game.

Reese Lipsky’s single in the sixth was Northern Lehigh’s (1-16) only other hit.

Palmerton-Palisades

Palisades pushed across five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 6-2 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Chase Reph connected for a two-run double in the opening inning for the Bombers. But Pirates’ (14-3, 13-3 CL) starter Mike Wallbillich held Palmerton scoreless the rest of the way.

Reph led the Bombers (11-7, 9-7) with two singles and two RBIs, while Connor Beahm added a single, double and a run scored.

BOYS LACROSSE

Northwestern-Moravian A.

Chris Fanning’s six goals and two assists highlighted Moravian Academy’s 12-7 win over visiting Northwestern.

Cristoferro Cucciuffo finished with 20 saves for the Lions (9-5).

Austin Sosnovik had four goals for the Tigers (9-7). Cade Christopher and Drew Sabo both had a goal and an assist, while Blaine Snyder added a goal and Andrew Collins recorded an assist. Bailen Smargiassi finished with six saves.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Northampton-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley cruised to a 16-1 victory over Northampton.

Alexandra Bush and Brielle McInaw powered the Bears, as Bush finished with five goals and two assists, while McInaw added six goals.

Emily Butler (two goals), Devon Bush (one goal) and Rylee Baloh (one goal) contributed with scores of their own, while Olivia Iandoli chipped in with three assists and Madison Fava also added an assist.

PV goalie Abygail Borger made three saves.

Moravian A.-Northwestern

Moravian Academy pulled out a 15-14 win over Northwestern.

Ava Collins led Northwestern with six goals and an assist, while Sarah Schultz added four goals. The Tigers (3-13) also got three goals from Alexis Vennera, and one from Olivia Costa.

Panther Vy.-Weatherly-

Shenandoah Valley

Panther Valley’s girls and Weatherly’s boys earned sweeps in a Schuylkill League meet Wednesday at Tamaqua.

Adriana Taveras (100), Mikayla Yurichek (200) and Chole Diekman (1600, 3200) all scored victories for the Panthers, who downed Weatherly 83-25 and topped Shenandoah Valley 74-45 in the girls’ meet. Makayla Weaver won the 300 hurdles for Panther Valley, while Sadie Trubilla also won the javelin.

Kendall Gerhart won the 400 and 800 for the Wreckers, who also fell to Shenandoah 50-29, while Rhianne Markcovchick took wins in the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump events.

On the boys’ side, Weatherly defeated PV (67-65) and Shenandoah Valley (73.5-45.5), while Panther Valley was able to take care of Shenandoah Valley 82.5-46.5.

Michael Pascoe took victories in both the discus and shot put events for the Panthers. Mergim Bushati (200) and Austin Hadley (400) also scored wins for the Panthers. PV’s Brad Lee Jones won the javelin, while Kyle Lin won the 110 hurdles for the Panthers.

Ricky Ray won the 1600 for the Wreckers, while Trent Higgins placed first in the 100. Michael Berger and Jacob Parker had the same winning time in the 3200 to share first place for the Wreckers. Tim Maguschak took home the 300 hurdles, and Frankie Willis won the high jump.
