A new morning drop-off location for Lehighton Area High School students will go into effect on Monday.
Between 7 and 7:30 a.m., high school students can be dropped off on the side of the building that shares a parking lot with the elementary center. That location is on the opposite of the school from where students are dropped off now and comes after concerns were raised at a board workshop two weeks ago.
Parent Dache Zelrick called the traffic flow on Indian Lane a “disaster” and cited several near collisions caused by impatient motorists.
“When there is a long line, you have people that just decide they are going to go around it,” Zelrick said. “Sometimes it is students who have arrived late or parents that just go around it. You’ll have cars stopped at the stop sign and then have other vehicles just cut right in front of that lane of traffic. It’s dangerous and needs to be looked at.”
On Monday night, acting Lehighton Superintendent Jack Corby said the district would try moving the student drop-off location and see how things worked out.
“We always want to provide a safe environment for our students, staff and our visitors,” Corby said. “The issues were brought to our attention, and we acted immediately. Bear with us this first week as we implement the change.”
Lehighton posted messages on its social media accounts this week announcing the change.
“Please enter the same way you currently enter the grounds for drop-off,” the message states. “We will have staff out in the lot the first few mornings directing parents/guardians on where to go. We ask that you don’t go around or pass other vehicles.”
