Local Roundup: Results from April 29

There were several standout performances in track and field action at East Stroudburg South’s Cavalier Invite on Friday.

Elsewhere, Northwestern picked up baseball and softball wins, while Palmerton and Marian earned softball victories and Pleasant Valley picked up a win in girls’ lacrosse action.

TRACK AND FIELD

Cavalier Invitational

A number of area athletes and teams turned in stellar showings at ES South’s Cavalier Invitational.

Jim Thorpe had six individual first place finishes and one relay victory. Laura Clarke shot put (35-5) and discus (99-11) and Kaila O’Connor 100 (12.45) and 200 (25.92) recorded multiple first-place finishes for the Olympians, who tied with Northampton for the girls’ team title with 93 points.

Katelynn Bos (1600, 5:33.28) and Ridge Snyder (800, 2:00.36), along with the Jim Thorpe girls 1600 relay (4:12.95) also placed first.

Palmerton’s Nataly Walters (long jump, 17-8; triple jump 35-11.5) had a pair of first-place finishes. Walters was also third in the 100 (13.06) for the Bombers, who were third in the girls’ team standings with 85 points. Emma Snyder (high jump, 5-0) and Owen Hibell (3200, 10:14.98) also placed first for Palmerton,

Lehighton’s Brittney Bartasavage won the 100 hurdles (16.22), and was also second in the 300 hurdles (49.59). The Indians were fifth in the girls’ team standings with 48.5 points.

Northern Lehigh’s Emily Moyer won the pole vault (10-0).

In the boys’ team standings, Jim Thorpe placed fourth with 55 points. Stroudsburg was first with 139.5 points.

The following area athletes placed second: Jim Thorpe’s David Richards (high jump, 5-10; 110 hurdles, 15.93), Aiden Clements (pole vault, 12-6), Leah Wasko (100 hurdles, 16.55), Ryan Bailor (1600, 4:34.39) and Nicole Carroll (400, 1:02.68); Palmerton’s Ana Recker (pole vault, 10-0), Emma Christman (long jump, 16-5.5), Jessica Heydt (shot put, 33-5), Brance Fronheiser (400, 52.68) and Bryson Walters (300 hurdles, 42.97); Lehighton’s girls’ 3200 relay (10:44.17) and boys’ 3200 relay (9:17.98)

The following area athletes placed third: Lehighton’s Haley Ginder (high jump, 4-10), Megan Aaron (triple jump, 33-10) and Ethan Buchert (100, 11.53); Jim Thorpe’s Katrin Cavanaugh (pole vault, 9-6) and girls’ 400 relay (52.13); Palmerton’s Emma Martinez (1600, 5:42.02); Northern Lehigh’s Katelynn Barthold (800, 2:30.26) and Jared Thomason (3200, 10:44.25).

BASEBALL

No. Lehigh-Northwestern

Northwestern scored early and often en route to an 11-3 Colonial League victory over rival Northern Lehigh.

The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, with Nicholas Scott delivering a two-run single. The winners put the game out of reach in the second with six more runs. Joshua Lichman had the big hit in the frame, blasting a three-run homer

Lichman ended with a pair of hits, while Justin Augustus added a hit and three runs. Eli Zimmerman chipped in with a hit and two runs, with winning pitcher Benjamin Boyer contributing a hit and two RBIs.

For the Bulldogs, Fenstermaker collected two hits and scored a run, and Van Norman had a double and two RBIs.

Northwestern won its fourth straight game and improved to 9-7 overall and 9-5 in the league. Nolehi dropped to 1-14 and 1-12.

Palmerton-Southern Lehigh

Matt Tankred pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Southern Lehigh blanked Palmerton, 10-0, in a Colonial League contest.

Tankred walked just two and struck out 11 as the Spartans improved to 13-2 overall and 13-1 in the league.

The loss dropped the Blue Bombers to 10-6 overall and 8-6 in the league.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Hunter Deichert pitched a four-hitter to lead Pine Grove to a 5-2 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Cardinals snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and tacked on two more in the fifth.

Carson Lengle had a triple and an RBI for Pine Grove, who won its 10th straight game and improved to 13-2.

For the Blue Raiders (1-12), Lucas Milot finished with two hits - both doubles - and a run, while Mason Moyer had a hit and an RBI.

Tri Valley-Weatherly

Tri-Valley won its 12th game in a row and stayed undefeated in Schuylkill League play by rolling to a 16-2 victory over Weatherly.

Brody Smith had two hits and knocked in three runs for the Bulldogs (12-1, 9-0), who scored four runs in the first and tacked on eight more in the second.

For the Wreckers (1-10, 0-6), Jack James had a double and an RBI, while Ismail Zuberi and Wyatt Higgins each had a hit. Klaus Eroh and Nathan Tripp both stole two bases, with one of Eroh’s a swipe of home.

SOFTBALL

Panther Valley-Marian

Alise Heisey had three hits and three RBIs, while Anna Grabosky collected a pair of hits and knocked in four to lead Marian to a 15-0 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Heisey finished with a single, double and triple to help the Fillies improve to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the league.

Morgan Kelly pitched a three-inning one-hitter and struck out seven. Kelly also helped out her own cause with a pair of hits - one a double - and three RBIs.

Julia Meiss chipped in with a hit and two RBIs, while Gracie Gallagher and Rhiannon Brady each added a hit and an RBI.

PV’s lone hit came from Kaidence Krapf. The Panthers are now 2-12 and 0-8.

Palmerton-Southern Lehigh

Palmerton ended Southern Lehigh’s 11-game winning streak and handed the Spartans their first Colonial League loss by gaining a 5-1 victory.

Carly Gaffney kept the Solehi bats at bay, limiting them to five hits.

Gaffney added a pair of hits at the plate, although the game’s biggest offensive moment came in fourth inning when Megan Matsko drilled a three-run homer. Matsko finished with a pair of hits, as did Mikayla Pengelly and Kelsey Balliet for Palmerton (12-5, 8-5).

Southern Lehigh falls to 12-2 and 7-1.

No. Lehigh-Northwestern

Northwestern slugged three home runs, two by Sage Toman, to post a 9-4 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Tigers, who trailed twice during the contest, also received a longball from Morgan Farthing.

Toman erased a 2-0 Bulldog lead with a two-run blast in the third inning. After Nolehi regained the lead in the top of the fifth, Farthing delivered a three-run shot to put Northwestern ahead to stay.

The Tigers sealed the contest with four more in the sixth, two of them coming on Toman’s second-roundtripper.

Toman and Farthing both ended the game with three hits, while Isabelle Akelaitis added two hits and a pair of runs.

Nolehi received two hits and an RBI from Skyeler Horack, with Emma Smith contributing a pair of hits. Candence Peters chipped in with a hit, run and RBI.

Northwestern improved to 12-2 overall and 11-1 in the league. The Bulldogs are now 8-7 and 4-6.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Megan Wolfe pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Pine Grove to a 5-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Wolfe walked one and struck out 10 to help the Cardinals improve to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in the league.

The Blue Raider (5-10, 4-6) hits came from Gabby Robb, Bryn Clifford and Hailey Williams. Clifford, who blanked Pine Grove for the first four innings, walked one and struck out seven.

Tri Valley-Weatherly

Undefeated Tri-Valley scored 16 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 21-0 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Lexi Snyder had three hits, tow of them doubles, to lead the Bulldogs (12-0, 9-0). The winners also received a pair of hits from Mia Artz, Sydney Schley and Cassi Snyder.

For the Wreckers (3-8, 1-7), Kelly Michaels had a double and Evelyn Ford singled.

N’western-Kutztown

Northwestern couldn’t overcome an early deficit in a 10-9 non-league loss to Kutztown Thursday.

The Tigers rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it a one-run game, with Brynn Balliet hitting the second of her two home runs. Morgan Farthing also had two homers for Northwestern – a solo shot in the first and a two-run blast in a three-run fifth. Isabelle Akelaitis was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.

Pleasant Valley posted its sixth-straight victory, rolling past Quakertown 17-3.

Brielle McInaw had six goals and four assists for the Bears (12-3), who led 7-0 at halftime. Devon Bush added four goals and four assists. Keylee Dugey (assist) and Emily Butler had three goals apiece for PV.
