Local Roundup: Results from April 22
The Tamaqua, Northern Lehigh and Northwestern softball teams all rolled to big victories on Friday.
SOFTBALL
Lehighton-Tamaqua
An outstanding pitching effort by Bryn Clifford allowed Tamaqua to gain a 7-0 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.
Clifford tossed a two-hit shutout, allowing no walks while striking out 12. The winning hurler also helped her own cause with two hits (one a double), a run and an RBI.
The Blue Raiders only led 2-0 after five innings, but Gabby Robb blasted a grand slam during the home sixth to put the game out of reach.
Robb finished with a pair of hits, her other one being a double. Hailey Williams also collected two doubles and scored a run for Tamaqua.
Lehighton’s only hits came from Abbie Miller and Addison Chavanic.
The win was the second in a row by the Raiders and lifted their record to 3-7. The Indians dropped to an identical 3-7 mark.

Northern Lehigh-NDES
Northern Lehigh’s top of the order had a productive game, helping the Bulldogs cruise to a 13-1 non-league victory over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg.
Nolehi’s 1-2-3 hitters combined to go 7-for-13 with six runs and five RBIs. Leadoff hitter Haylie Fenstermaker had two hits and three runs, while No. 2 in the lineup - Skyeler Horack - finished with a pair of hits, two runs and knocked in three. Kaitlyn Stock completed the strong showing at the top with three hits and two RBIs.
The Bulldogs, who scored in every inning but one, also received two hits (double, triple), two runs and three RBIs from Arabella Heintzelman.
Kendall Heiney had a stellar effort from the circle, giving up just one hits and one walk while striking out eight in six innings of work.
The win upped Northern Lehigh’s record to 6-5.

Saucon Vy.-Northwestern
Sage Toman and Marissa Christman both hit home runs to power Northwestern to a 12-1 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.
After the Tigers exploded for seven first-inning runs, Christman drilled a solo shot in the second to make it 8-0. Toman connected for a three-run blast during a four-run third frame.
Toman finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Christman ended with two hits.
Winning pitcher Brynn Balliet tossed three hitless innings, walking one and striking out seven.
Northwestern is now 10-1, while Saucon dropped to 1-8.

Sch. Haven-Weatherly
Chloey Homan and Kyleigh Book both had two hits and Nikki Domermuth hit a home run to lead Schuylkill Haven to a 10-0 victory over Weatherly.
Katelyn Donne pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine batters for the winners.
The Wreckers (3-4) received hits from Anna Bloom, Madisyn vonFrisch and Juju Bartel.

Bangor-Palmerton
Bangor recorded a 4-2 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.
Jaelyn Silfies tossed a complete-game two-hitter for the Slaters to earn the pitching victory. Offensively, Lexi Bussenger had a hit and scored twice, while Brooke Edwards had a hit and an RBI.
For the Bombers (9-4, 5-4), Mikayla Pengelly had a double and Cadee Munjone added an RBI.

Williams Valley defeated Marian, 15-5, in Schuylkill League action.
Groff had five hits for to lead the Vikings offensively.
Eden Fleming and Anna Grabosky had two hits apiece for Marian (7-3, 4-2)
BASEBALL
Marian-Williams Valley
Marian jumped out to an early lead but Williams Valley rallied to gain a 5-3 Schuylkill League victory.
The Colts had a 3-0 advantage after three innings, but a three-run fifth inning by the Vikings proved to be the difference.
Brian Hinkle had two doubles and scored twice for Marian, who also received a pair of hits and an RBI from Joey Walko.
Williams Valley was led by Logan Williard, who had three hits and scored a run. Gavin Sutton added two hits and knocked in a pair of runs.
The loss dropped the Colts to 6-5.

Saucon Vy.-Northwestern
Saucon Valley scored nine runs late in the game to post a 10-6 Colonial League comeback victory over Northwestern.
The Tigers led 4-1 after four innings, but the Panthers rallied for four runs in the fifth with Erik Smith’s two-run double putting the visitors ahead for good.
Rocco Viscito had two hits and scored three runs to lead Saucon.
Northwestern’s Ben Boyer collected two hits and knocked in a pair of runs, while Dylan Witkowski added a pair of hits. Justin Augustus chipped in with a hit, run and two RBIs.
The Tigers fell to 5-7, while the Panthers are now 8-2.

Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove
A five-run third inning broke a tie game and helped Pine Grove earn an 11-2 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.
The Cardinals scored on a passed ball, hit batter and walk in the third before Ethan Hannevig delivered a two-run single.
Hannevig ended with two hits and three RBIs in the contest, while Lane Lehman collected three hits.
For the Olympians, who fell to 4-7, Garrett Lienhard had three hits - one a double - and scored a run. Casey McArdle chipped in with a hit and an RBI.

Bangor-Palmerton
Starting pitcher Hunter Rydell allowed one earned run and struck out eight to lead Bangor to a 5-2 Colonial League win over Palmerton.
Rydell worked into the seventh inning before Ashdon Buist relieved and got the final two outs.
Kael Godshalk led the Slaters (5-7) with a single, a double and two RBIs. Blake Kornafel added a double and also knocked in two runs.
For Palmerton (7-4), Jacob Grammes had a pair of singles and drove in a run, while Connor Beahm had two hits and scored a run.

Panther Vy.-Tri-Valley
Tri-Valley scored five times in the opening inning and went on to post a 10-1 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.
Jonas McGrath earned the pitching victory. He worked six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out seven.
McGrath, Kole Miller, and Devin Wertz all had three hits for the Bulldogs. Brody Smith had two this and three RBIs. McGrath and Kameron Wetzel both belted home runs.
For Panther Valley, Drew Kokinda went 3-for-3 and scored his team’s lone run.

TRACK
Pine Grove Invitational
The Weatherly boys captured three first place finishes and the Tamaqua girls picked up one at the Pine Grove Invitational.
Ricky Ray and Jacob Parker had individual firsts for the Wreckers. Ray turned in a time of 2:07.16 to take the 800, while Parker’s winning time in the 3200 was 10:37.4. Ray and Parker then teamed up with Michael Berger and Frankie Willis to win the 3200 meter relay.
The other area first place finish was turned in by Tamaqua’s Shyann Weighknecht in the discus (93-1).
The top eight finishers in each event earned team points. In addition to the Raiders and Wreckers, Panther Valley also took part in the meet.
Tamaqua finished fourth in the boys meet with 66.5 points, Weatherly was 7th with 41.5 points and Panther Valley was 11th with 14 points. Shamokin’s 122 points was tops among the boys.
In the girls meet, host Pine Grove was first with 125.5 points. Tamaqua was fifth with 70 points, while Weatherly and Panther Valley tied for 10th with 12 points.
In addition to the event winners, the following area athletes earned points for their schools:

Tamaqua also earned a 4th place finished in the 400 relay, a 5th in the 1600 relay and a 2nd in the 3200 relay.
Weatherly boys - Ian McLaurin (100, 6th); Michael Berger (800, 5th). Weatherly also had a 5th place finish in the 1600 relay.
Panther Valley boys - Brian Wilde (triple jump, 7th); Austin Hadley (shot put, 7th); Brad Jones (javelin, 2nd).
Tamaqua girls - Sarah Hope (100, 6th); Grace Stegemerten (800, 5th); Stegemerten (1600, 4th); Ashley Jones (100 hurdles, 2nd); Jones (300 hurdles, 2nd); Anna Zelinsky (300 hurdles, 6th); Alexa Stianche (high jump, 5th); Kaziah Streisel (shot put, 2nd). Tamaqua also finished 2nd in the 400 relay and 3rd in the 3200 relay.
Weatherly girls - Kendall Gerhart (400, 8th); Rhianna Markovchick (100 hurdles, 3rd); Markovchick (long jump, 5th); Markovchick (triple jump, 8th).
Panther Valley girls - Izabella Bochicchio (shot put, 8th); Sadie Trubilla (javelin, 3rd).
