Bush hits milestone as Bears top Tigers
It’s a shot Alexandra Bush has taken countless times.
And it’s one the Pleasant Valley senior usually makes.
But when Bush converted on Friday, it was different.
With the Bears celebrating their senior night and Bush needing just three goals to reach a career scoring milestone, she wasn’t about to miss.
The senior capped the special night with her 200th career goal – and 300th career point – as the Bears rolled to a 16-7 non-league win over Northwestern on Friday.
“That type of shot, it was just a pull-back, and then running straight through the lane to get it into the corner of the goal,” Bush said. “I’ve done that plenty of times, and I’m familiar with that type of shot. What I was thinking when I was doing it was, ‘Uh, just make this one so that I can get to my 200th,’ And thankfully I did.
“I was a little nervous, But I knew my team would be there to support me, and help me through it, and help me get to my 200th goal.”
The score came with 3:55 left in the first half and came during a four goal run that eventually pushed the Bears’ lead to 8-3.
Bush, the reigning Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Lacrosse Player of the Year, scored four of her seven goals in the first half.
“I’m thrilled,” said Pleasant Valley coach Toni Bush, Alexandra’s mom. “I love to see her and all of my seniors go home tonight feeling happy and content, and being able to say that they had a fantastic senior night.”
The Tigers (2-9) got a goal from Ava Collins with 0:07 left before the half to cut the deficit to four, and added another score from Alexis Vennera a minute into the second half to make it 8-5.
A fourth card on the Bears with 23:26 remaining in the second half meant they would have to play the remainder of the contest down one player, but they didn’t let it faze them as they responded with seven unanswered goals - the first four of which came from senior Brielle McInaw, who finished with six scores and two assists.
“Alexandra is like our precision shooter, and Brielle is like our power shooter,” said Toni Bush. “The two of them together are great, and I’m thrilled to see how many other attackers we have this year scoring.
“This year, our offense is very balanced. All of them are putting the ball in the back of the cage, and it’s really nice to see, because as they leave, the level of play that they have presented for the rest of the team, it’s raised the bar for everybody. It’s good, and we’re really excited.”
Pleasant Valley (9-3) has gotten plenty of contributions from the underclassmen on its roster.
Freshmen Devon Bush (assist) and Olivia Iandoli and sophomore Emily Butler each scored on Friday.
Northwestern tied it at 2-2 on a goal from Sarah Schultz with 17:16 left in the first half, and made it 4-3 with 8:10 left in the first half.
“All I want to see when I go out there is that they’re executing on the things that we talked about and we’re learned in practice,” said first-year Tigers’ coach Bridget Cerciello. “We’re still working through that, but we are seeing glimpses of that, and they’re definitely learning, they’re definitely getting better. Even though I know our score, our record doesn’t really reflect that a lot of the time.”
Cerciello is building a squad that has been competitive throughout the season, and is only going to keep growing and improving in the future.
“We like to say that we’re a whole new Northwestern lacrosse team,” said the coach. “When we play other teams, they don’t know who Northwestern lacrosse is yet. And every team that we play, we don’t like to think about who they are; we come into a game expecting that we can win, and we can compete.
“So when we are close like that, I think it’s a huge confidence boost, and it kind of proves to us exactly what we believe – we can hang with teams, and we can beat teams,”
Emilee Schultz opened the scoring for Northwestern in the first half.
SPECIAL NIGHT
... Alexandra Bush’s score also came with the PV youth lacrosse players in attendance, giving them a moment they likely won’t forget and providing an example for them to follow. “It’s super exciting, because I remember being one of those kids looking up to the high schoolers,” said Bush. “And just being so exited to get to this point. I love being able to look at these kids and see what they’re going to be doing in their future, and hopefully they’re going to continue their lacrosse career and make it to the high school field.”
SAVES
... Senior goalie Amanda Hayes made four saves for the Bears. Northwestern’s Gabriella Gober stopped 16 shots.
