Local Roundup: Results from April 17

A number of area teams received strong pitching performances that produced wins on Monday.

BASEBALL

Panther Vy.-Mahanoy Area

An outstanding pitching performance by Cody Orsulak lifted Panther Valley to a 4-0 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

Orsulak fired a one-hit shutout in a game called due to snow in the seventh inning. The PV hurler - who also helped his own cause with a double and an RBI - walked just one and struck out 15 in 6 1/3 innings.

Hayden Goida finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI for the Panthers, who won their fifth straight game and improved to 7-1. Chase Weaver also contributed a hit and two runs.

Mahanoy’s Santino Napoli had the only hit for his team, who fell to 2-3.

Pleasant Valley-Nazareth

A solid outing on the mound by Ben Mostosky led Pleasant Valley to a 5-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Nazareth.

Mostosky tossed a four-hitter, allowing just one earned run and one walk while fanning eight.

Austin Ratti delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie, while Mostosky’s squeeze bunt in the seventh provided an insurance run.

The Bears’ Jake Gethen finished with three hits and two runs, while Jack Smale added a hit, walked three times and scored twice. Ratti ended with three RBIs.

The win upped PV’s record to 8-2.

Marian-Weatherly

Michael Gelatko pitched a three-inning no-hitter, and Marian exploded for 14 second-inning runs to register a 16-1 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Gelatko allowed an unearned run and two walks, while striking out six.

Ten different Colts recorded hits in the contest with Brian Hinkle, Jake Bobish and Matt Martin all finishing with two each. Bobish knocked in four runs and scored once, while Hinkle had three RBIs and crossed home twice. Martin ended with three runs and an RBI.

Chase Petrilyak added a hit, two RBIs and a pair of runs for the winners, who improved to 6-3. Mason Gibson also doubled, scored two runs and had an RBI.

The loss dropped the Wreckers to 1-6.

SOFTBALL

Marian-Weatherly

Morgan Kelly starred in the circle for Marian, tossing a one-hit shutout to lead her team to a 13-0 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Kelly walked just one and struck out 14, helping the Fillies improve to 7-1.

After a scoreless tie through two innings, Marian’s bats came to life in the third as it plated eight runs.

Julia Meiss collected two hits, one a triple, scored twice and knocked in three runs for the winners, who also received a hit and three runs from Alise Heisey.

For the Wreckers, now 2-2, Maddie vonFrisch had her team’s only hit - a double in the fourth inning.

Pleasant Valley-Nazareth

A six-run fifth inning by Nazareth allowed the Blue Eagles to erase a deficit and gain a 14-7 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears held a 3-1 lead in the second inning, and then took a 6-5 advantage in the top of the fifth before Nazareth scored nine unanswered runs.

Hailey Krock finished with three hits - one a double - and scored three runs for PV. Danica Getz added two hits, one a double, as well as a run and an RBI, while Sam Ratti reached base four times with two hits and two walks.

The Eagles improved to 7-2, and Pleasant Valley dropped to 2-6.

Play was suspended after an inning of play with Wilson holding a 1-0 lead over Palmerton.

Moravian Academy improved to 9-1 by posting a 5-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Ford Koch, Obezue Bell and Jake Dubow swept singles play for the Lions.

The loss dropped the Blue Bombers to 2-5.
