Tamaqua girl praised for quick response to fire

Nico Conahan, 12, was walking her dog with her father, John, Saturday afternoon when she spotted flames shooting from the back porch of a neighbor’s home in Tamaqua.

“She backtracked about 100 feet and went to a telephone pole where a fire box was located and pulled the alarm,” said her grandmother, Beth Fritzinger-Jones.

Conahan’s quick response likely saved the 126 Greenwood St. property.

Fritzinger-Jones said she’s proud of her granddaughter for doing what she did.

“In a day where most kids would have watched or took a video, she quickly responded and did what she should have,” Fritzinger-Jones said.

For Conahan, though, it was in her blood.

“I knew from listening to Pop on what to do if we saw a fire,” explained Conahan, a sixth-grade student at Tamaqua Area Middle School.

“Pop” is Robert “Rob” Jones, a Tamaqua volunteer firefighter for more than 45 years.

After pulling the alarm, Conahan ran home to alert her grandparents.

Meanwhile, Fritzinger-Jones also sprang into action, calling 911, and running to the neighbor’s home.

“I was banging on the door, laying on the doorbell and screaming for them to get out,” she said. “I went to the back of the house, and it was literally dripping fire into the yard and into the neighbor’s yard.”

She frantically alerted residents of the adjoining homes as well.

As the action unfurled, the borough’s fire whistles - thanks to Conahan - were blaring.

Tamaqua police arrived and began soaking the flames with extinguishers. Seconds later, all four borough fire companies rolled in.

“It didn’t get into the house,” Fritzinger-Jones noted. The residents - and their pets - were able to return to their home.

Told that she’s a hero, Conahan blushed from head to toe, her grandmother said.

“I’m proud of myself,” she admitted.
