Local roundup: Results from April 16

Palmerton posted wins in both baseball and softball action on Saturday.

The Blue Bombers knocked off Lehighton in both sports.

Elsewhere, Panther Valley and Jim Thorpe split a pair of games, with PV winning in baseball and Thorpe taking the softball contest.

BASEBALL

Palmerton-Lehighton

Palmerton ran its winning streak to seven games after gaining a 9-2 non-league victory over Lehighton.

Connor Beahm was strong on the mound for the Bombers, scattering six hits and allowing no walks while striking out eight in six innings of work.

After the Indians took a 1-0 lead in the first, Nate Steinmetz doubled in the tying run in the second and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI-single by Jacob Grammes.

The winners, now 7-2, tallied runs in the next four innings to help pull away for the victory.

Grammes finished with two hits, while Daniel Lucykanish and Cole Serfass both added a hit and two runs.

For the Indians, who dropped to 5-3, Ian Rarick had three hits and scored twice. Austin Greene added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Panther Valley-Jim Thorpe

Panther Valley scored five times in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 7-2 extra-inning win over Jim Thorpe.

A bases-loaded walk to Tyler Black pushed across the tie-breaking run in the eighth, and Andrew Kokinda followed with a two-run double. Hayden Goida later delivered an RBI-double for insurance.

Chase Weaver finished with two hits and two runs for the Panthers, while Michael Pascoe added a pair of hits and an RBI. Cody Orsulak chipped in with two hits and a run.

For the Olympians, who held a 2-0 lead after two frames, James Lordi ended with three hits - one a double.

Starters Brad Hood of PV, and Rich Strack of Jim Thorpe, both pitched well. Hood gave up just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings, walking three while striking out six. Strack, meanwhile, tossed seven innings, giving up two runs and one walk while fanning three.

The Panthers’ Stephen Hood gained the win, pitching 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball and striking out six.

The win upped PV’s record to 6-1, while Thorpe dropped to 3-5.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-Lehighton

Carly Gaffney pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Palmerton to a 3-0 non-league victory over Lehighton.

Gaffney didn’t walk a batter and struck out 16 to help the Blue Bombers improve to 7-3.

The game was scoreless through five innings, but Gaffney and Kaylee Strohl both knocked in runs during a three-run sixth inning.

Megan Matsko finished with two hits, one a double, and a run for Palmerton.

The Indians’ Abbie Miller pitched five shutout innings before the Bombers got on the board. Miller allowed seven hits and no walks while fanning 11.

Lehighton fell to 3-4.

Panther Valley-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe exploded for 11 runs in the third inning and cruised to a 14-2 victory over Panther Valley.

Tara McLean homered and knocked in five runs for the Olympians, who also received a three-hit pitching performance from Amanda Goodchild.

Thorpe’s Carsen Rosenberger contributed three hits and three runs, while Alexia Rohrman added two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Taylor Mordaunt also had a big day at the plate, collecting three hits - one a triple - and two RBIs.

For PV, Brenna Beshock slugged a home run.

The Olympians improved to 4-5, and the Panthers fell to 0-6.
