Wreckers’ vonFrisch tosses no-hitter

MAHANOY CITY – The storyline for Thursday’s Weatherly-Mahanoy Area softball game can be summed up with one name – Madisyn vonFrisch.

The smooth-throwing Wrecker pitcher was outstanding from start to finish.

vonFrisch was coming off a tough loss and needed a pick-me-up. As it turned out, Mahanoy Area provided the dose of medicine that vonFrisch and the Wreckers needed.

The Weatherly junior tossed a no-hitter, striking out 16 batters, in leading her team to a 7-1 Schuylkill League Division 3 victory.

“Maddie is so effective, as you can see by what she did,” Weatherly coach Will Bartel said.

vonFrisch was sailing along, retiring 17 straight batters to start the game, before a swinging strikeout was dropped and Mahanoy’s Cambria Mayberry was able to reach first in the bottom of the sixth. However, vonFrisch never lost her composure and quickly struck out the next batter. That was the fourth strikeout of the inning - an unusual feat.

“She’s always around the plate,” Bartel said. “You know, if you make plays, it is an easy game to play. We didn’t make plays in our (loss) to Shenandoah the day before. Today we made most of the plays. We have six kids that have never played softball before who are starting for us, but we are getting better.”

Mahanoy Area’s lone run came in the seventh on another dropped third strike and a pair of errors.

Weatherly had more than enough run production to cover the miscues, however.

The Wreckers scored three runs on five hits to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Kelly Michaels singled to open the game, vonFrisch looped a Texas League single behind third sending Michaels to third, and vonFrisch took an extra base on the throw in. Rachel Rosenlund drilled a two-run single to center, before Evelynn Ford added the innings fifth hit chasing Rosenlund home for a 3-0 lead.

Weatherly’s bats cooled until the sixth when it put together its final outburst of the day. The Wreckers sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs, with Anna Bloom’s two-run double proving to be the big blow.

LASHING AWAY … Weatherly banged out 12 hits on the afternoon. vonFrisch and Ford were the headliners with three hits apiece. Ava Sahaida chipped in with two singles.

CHUCKING IT … vonFrisch didn’t walk a batter. She tossed a total of 95 pitches - 79 of them for strikes.

FEELING PAIN … “We’re making the same mistakes over and over. Until we cut those back, it’s going to continue to hurt us,” said first-year Mahanoy Area coach Steph Price.
