Township to spend nearly $100K on backhoe

A new backhoe for its road department will cost Mahoning Township nearly $100,000.

On a narrow 3-2 vote, supervisors on Wednesday agreed to buy a New Holland backhoe in the amount of $99,862.

Supervisors Ronald Reeser, Brian Reeser and Deb McGowan were in favor. Board Chairman Robert Slaw and Supervisor Myron “Zeke” Blahy were opposed.

Township roadmaster Nevin Frey said the backhoe’s anticipated arrival is sometime between September and October.

It was noted the township has been putting money into repairing its current backhoe for years.

Before the vote, McGowan said the choice should be clear.

“We have a need for a backhoe,” McGowan said.
