Local Roundup: Results from April 14

Three area teams posted wins in baseball action on Thursday

Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley and Pleasant Valley all earned victories on the diamond.

Northern Lehigh softball and Northwestern boys lacrosse also got into the win column.

BASEBALL

No. Lehigh-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe scored six runs in the second inning, and ended up cruising to an 11-1 non-league victory over Northern Lehigh.

The big frame was fueled by three run-producing hits - Chip Baldassano’s two-run single, James Lordi’s RBI-triple and Evan Murphy’s RBI-single.

Murphy and Garrett Lienhard both finished the contest with two hits, two runs and an RBI, while Lordi contributed a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run. Thorpe, which improved to 3-4, also received a pair of hits and a run from Jack Edwards.

Matthew Craigie was strong on the mound for the winners, allowing just five hits and two walks in six innings of work. Craigie finished with three strikeouts.

For the Bulldogs, who dropped to 0-10, Jackson Van Norman had a hit and an RBI, while Cole Hausman doubled and scored a run.

Panther Vy.-Notre Dame ES

Panther Valley improved to 5-1 after rolling to a 20-0 non-league victory over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg.

The Panthers plated eight runs in each of the first two innings to put the game out of reach.

PV hurler Michael Pascoe tossed a three-inning perfect game, striking out five.

Matt Engler paced the Panthers at the plate, finishing with three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Hayden Goida added a pair of hits and knocked in three, while Andrew Kokinda finished with two hits and two runs.

David McAndrew also chipped in with two hits, a run and an RBI. Chase Weaver collected a hit and scored three times.

Delaware Vy.-Pleasant Vy.

Andrew Meitzler pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Pleasant Valley to a 10-0 non-league victory over Delaware Valley.

Meitzler allowed two walks and struck out one in the five-inning contest.

PV’s Nate Loch reached base in all four plate appearances, collecting two hits and walking twice. Loch knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice.

Ben Mostosky added two hits and two RBIs for the Bears, who scored eight times in the opening inning. Ryan Kymer also chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

The win lifted Pleasant Valley’s record to 7-2.

Northwestern-Blue Mtn.

Dylan Sattazhan shut down Northwestern to lead Blue Mountain to an 8-0 non-league victory.

Sattazhan allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out seven in his 6 2/3 innings of work.

Ryan Grace paced the Eagles offensively with three hits, including a triple and a homer. He also knocked in four runs. Andrew Rautzhan added two hits, a run and an RBI.

For the Tigers, Justin Augustus collected a pair of hits.

The loss dropped Northwestern to 4-6, while Blue Mountain evened its record at 4-4.

Tamaqua-Kutztown

Kutztown used a pair of five-run innings to hand Tamaqua a 13-5 non-league defeat.

The Cougars scored five times in the first inning, with three of the runs coming on Jacob Rabert’s homer, to grab a lead they would never relinquish. They tallied five more runs in the fourth.

Ian Fenerty led the winners with three hits, two runs and an RBI.

For the Blue Raiders, Wyatt Steigerwalt and Tommy Case both had two hits and scored a run. Teammate Chase Andrews also chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

The loss dropped Tamaqua to 0-5.

Weatherly-Mahanoy Area

Weatherly was limited to just one hit as Mahanoy Area cruised to a 15-0 Schuylkill League victory.

The Bears scored seven runs in both the first and second innings to key the rout.

Sonny Napoli had three hits and knocked in three runs for the winners, while Levi Terry tossed all five innings to earn the shutout win.

The Wreckers’ only hit came off the bat of Jack James.

Weatherly drops to 1-5, while Mahanoy upped its mark to 2-2.

SOFTBALL

No. Lehigh-Jim Thorpe

Northern Lehigh’s offense exploded during a 20-0 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Bulldogs collected 20 hits in the contest, including 12 during a 15-run fourth inning.

Jordyn Hemingway blasted a two-run homer during the fourth, while Arabella Heintzelman added a three-run double.

Five Northern Lehigh players all finished with three hits - Hemingway, Cadence Peters, Haylie Fenstermaker, Skyelar Horack and Kaitlyn Stock. Hemingway knocked in four runs, while Peters and Horack both had three RBIs. Fensetrmaker and Horack both scored three runs. The winners, now 5-4, also received two hits and a pair of runs from Jeweliana Andrews.

Kendall Heiney allowed just one hit and struck out four to earn the victory.

The loss dropped the Olympians to 3-5.

Marian-Western Wayne

Marian suffered its first loss of the season, as Western Wayne edged the Fillies 2-0 in a non-league affair.

Morgan Kelly pitched well in defeat, allowing just two hits. Kelly pitched shutout ball for five innings before the Wildcats pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth.

Kelly had one of her team’s two hits, with Jackie Guth adding the other.

The loss dropped the Fillies to 6-1.

BOYS LACROSSE

Nazareth-Northwestern

Austin Sosnovik and Drew Sabo both scored three goals to help Northwestern gain a narrow 9-8 victory over Nazareth.

Sosnovik also added an assist, as the Tigers improved to 5-4.

Cade Christopher finished with five assists for the winners, while Andrew Collins contributed a pair of goals and several assists.

Northwestern also received a goal from Blaine Snyder, while goalie Bailen Smargiassi made eight saves.

GIRLS LACROSSE

So. Lehigh-Pleasant Valley

A second-half rally by Pleasant Valley came up just short as the Bears dropped a 10-9 decision to Southern Lehigh.

PV trailed 8-3 at halftime, but nearly came back against the Spartans.

Brielle McInaw had three goals and two assists for the Bears. She also finished with five draw controls, two caused turnovers and several ground balls. Alexandra Bush added four goals and six draw controls.

Devon Bush and Emma Butler both had a goal apiece for PV, with Bush also contributing three ground balls.

For Solehi, Reese MacIntosh had two goals and three assists, and Riley MacIntosh added three goals.

The Bears fell to 6-3, while the Spartans improved to 7-1.

TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain swept singles play en route to a 5-0 victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Eagles received straight-set wins from JT Gockel, Justin Kim and Max Freed.

Jim Thorpe fell to 3-10, while Blue Mountain moved to 10-6.

Pleasant Valley-Emmaus

Emmaus didn’t drop a set in posting a 6-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Eddy Chow and Nic Gilboy both took 6-0, 6-0 decision at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to key the win.

The loss dropped PV to 4-13.
