Local Roundup: Results from April 9-10

Northwestern’s softball team remained undefeated with a victory over Palmerton over the weekend.

The win was the Tigers’ seventh in a row.

Two other teams kept their winning streaks intact. Palmerton topped Northwestern in baseball, while Pleasant Valley’s girls lacrosse team blanked North Pocono to extend their streaks to five straight.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-Northwestern

An eight-run second inning propelled Northwestern to a 10-2 Colonial League victory over Palmerton on Sunday.

Marissa Christman and Morgan Farthing paced the Tigers on offense, as both players finished with three hits and two RBIs. Christman had two doubles and a single, while Farthing ended with two singles and a triple.

The winners, who remained undefeated at 7-0 overall, also received two hits and two RBIs from Sage Toman. Quinn Conrey added a pair of hits and an RBI. Brynn Balliet earned the win, walking three while striking out five.

For the Bombers, Sydney Frantz collected two doubles, scored a run and knocked in one. Madison Green chipped in with a hit and an RBI.

The loss dropped Palmerton to 4-3.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-Palmerton

A big game from Kaleb Eitner helped Palmerton roll past Northwestern, 12-2, in a Colonial League contest on Sunday.

Eitner collected four hits, two of them doubles, and knocked in four runs. Eitner’s two-run double in the home sixth ended the game via the 10-run rule.

The Blue Bombers, who have won five in a row, also received two hits and four runs from Cole Serfass. Garrett Horvath contributed a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Daniel Lucykanish chipped in with two hits and scored twice.

Winning pitcher Connor Beahm chipped in with a hit and knocked in two runs. On the mound, Beahm tossed five solid innings, allowing six hits, two runs and a walk while striking out three.

For the Tigers, Ben Boyer and Justin Augustus both finished with two hits, while Eli Zimmerman had a hit and two runs.

Palmerton improved to 5-2, and Northwestern fell to 2-5.

Jim Thorpe- Sch. Haven

Schuylkill Haven’s Aidan Clauser delivered a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Hurricanes to a 6-5 comeback victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Rich Strack’s two-run single. After Haven tied the game in the home first, Ian Henkels laced a two-run double in the second to put Thorpe back on top.

Garrett Lienhard blasted a solo homer for the Olympians in the seventh, but the Hurricanes rallied with three runs in the home half to pull out the win.

Lienhard and Henkels both had two hits for Thorpe (2-2).

Marian-South Williamsport

Three South Williamsport pitchers combined to throw a four-hit shutout against Marian.

Grant Bachman tossed the first five frames for the winners, who posted all their runs in the first two innings of their 5-0 victory.

Jake Bobish had two of the Colts’ hits, with Chase Petrilyak and Joey Walko adding the others.

The loss dropped Marian to 3-3.

GIRLS LACROSSE

N. Pocono-Pleasant Valley

Seven different players scored goals, as Pleasant Valley rolled to an 18-0 nonconference win over North Pocono.

Brieller McInaw had five goals to lead the Bears, who ran their winning streak to five, while Alexandra Bush finished with four. McInaw added two caused turnovers, while Bush also contributed two assists, 12 draw controls and three caused turnovers.

PV, which led 12-0 at halftime, received four goals from Emily Butler and two tallies from Olivia Iandoli. Devon Bush chipped in with a goal, two assists and four caused turnovers.

Other goals were registered by Cecilia Cordova and Madison Fava.

The win lifted Pleasant Valley’s record to 5-2.

N’western-Moravian Aca.

Megann Daslio and Adeline Weidner both scored five goals to lead Moravian Academy to an 11-6 victory over Northwestern.

The Tigers, who dropped to 1-6, received two goals and an assist from Ava Collins. Other Northwestern tallies came from Emilee Shultz, Sarah Shultz, Olivia Costa and Lexi Vennera.

The win upped the Lions’ record to 3-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

Moravian Aca.y-N’western

Andrew Collins scored a short-handed goal with three minutes left to play to lift Northwestern to an 8-7 victory over Moravian academy.

Collins finished with three goals and three assists to help the Tigers improve to 3-3.

The winners also received two goals and an assist from Austin Sosnovik, while Andrew Sabo added a pair of goals. Blaine Snyder chipped in with a goal and an assist, with Cade Christopher contributing an assist. Tiger goalie Bailen Smargiassi made 10 saves.

For the Lions, AJ Lorenzo had three goals and an assist.

TRACK & FIELD

ES South-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley split an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet with East Stroudsburg South on Friday.

The PV girls rolled to a 111-38 victory, while the Cavalier boys edged the Bears, 76-74.

Reese Ruggiero won three individual events (long jump, triple jump, pole vault) in the girls meet. The Bears outscored Eastburg 34-1 in the jumps and pole vault. Other multiple winners for PV were De’Nair Drew (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Samantha Merklin (shot put, discus).

In the boys meet, the Cavaliers used a 41-22 advantage in the field events - including a 25-2 margin in the throws - to pull out the narrow win.

The Bears took all three relays, and received individual wins from Raymond Lursen (800), Tyler Akob (1600), Andrew Ryals (3200) and Jacob Michael (pole vault).
