Local Roundup: Results from April 2
Lehighton and Marian remained undefeated on the baseball diamond with convincing wins on Saturday.
The Indians topped Catasauqua, while the Colts crushed Salem Christian.
Elsewhere, Pleasant Valley posted a pair of victories, as its baseball and girls lacrosse teams both gained wins.
BASEBALL
Catasauqua-Lehighton
The top of the lineup had an outstanding game for Lehighton in an 8-2 non-league victory over Catasauqua.
The first three hitters for the Indians went a combined 7-for-11 with five RBIs to help the team remained undefeated.
Leadoff hitter Aiden Rarick led the way with three hits - one a double. He also scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Ian Rarick added two hits and a run, while Talen Sensinger finished with several hits and three RBIs.
Carter Birnbaum earned the win, allowing four hits and one run in four innings of work. He struck out six while allowing no walks.
The victory lifted Lehighton to 4-0, while the Rough Riders dropped to 2-2.

Salem Christian-Marian
Marian won its third straight game by cruising to a 16-0 non-league victory over Salem Christian Academy.
Brian Hinkle and Chase Petrilyak both collected two hits and knocked in three runs for the Colts, who scored nine times in the first inning. Hinkle also scored three times in the contest.
Matt Martin and Michael Gelatko each chipped in with a hit and two RBIs. Mason Gibson, who had a hit and RBI at the plate, pitched two hitless innings and struck out four to gain the win. Gelatko tossed the final inning to complete a three-inning no-hitter.
Marian improved to 3-0, while Salem fell to 0-1.

Pleasant Valley-Freedom
Jack Smale excelled on the mound and at the plate to help lift Pleasant Valley to a 5-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Freedom.
Smale went the distance, scattering seven hits while allowing just one run and three walks. He also struck out four.
At the plate, Smale had two hits and knocked in three runs. His two-run single in the first inning gave the Bears (3-1) a lead they would never relinquish.
Nate Loch had two hits, one a double, and scored twice for PV, with Andrew Meitzler and Ryan Kymer both contributing a pair of hits. Dominic Payan also chipped in with a hit and two runs.

Panther Vy.-Shenandoah
Shenandoah Valley captured the Minersville Tournament championship by gaining a narrow 1-0 victory over Panther Valley.
The Devils pushed across the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Kaleb Maksimik.
Maksimik also shut down the Panthers from the mound, giving up just one hit and two walks in six innings. The winning pitcher also struck out seven.
PV managed just two hits in the contest, one each from Chase Weaver and Matt Engler. Stephen Hood pitched well in defeat, striking out eight while allowing just the one run and three walks in five innings of work.
The Panthers fell to 2-1, with Shenandoah improving to 2-0.

SOFTBALL
Tamaqua-Palmerton
A big game from Carly Gaffney helped Palmerton post a 5-1 non-league victory over Tamaqua.
Gaffney gave up just two hits and one run while striking out 10 from the circle. She also helped her own cause by collecting a hit and knocking in three runs.
Kaylee Strohl collected a pair of hits for the Blue Bombers, while Mikayla Pengelly finished with a hit and two runs. Alyssa Silliman also chipped in with a triple and an RBI.
For the Blue Raiders, Megan Lavine had a hit and an RBI. Gabby Robb had her team’s other hit.
The win upped Palmerton to 2-1, with the loss dropping Tamaqua to 0-1.

Shenandoah-Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe pitcher Amanda Goodchild struck out 16 batters to help the Olympians register a 6-4 non-league victory over Shenandoah Valley.
Goodchild punched out at least one Devil in every inning, including the side in the first, second, fifth and seventh frames.
Shenandoah broke a tie with a run in the top of the fifth, but Thorpe responded with three in the bottom half to account for the winning margin.
Tara McLean and Taylor Mordaunt both had two hits and a run for the Olympians, who improved to 1-1. Allie Skrimcovsky also finished with a pair of hits.
The loss dropped the Devils to 1-1.

Pleasant Valley-Freedom
Freedom jumped out to a huge lead early and cruised to a 13-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.
The Patriots plated eight runs in the first inning, with Julia Heineman delivering a two-run single during the frame.
Heineman finished with a pair of hits and knocked in four runs for the winners, while Natalie Stannard ended with three hits. Both Julia Griffith and Kaitlin McDevitt hit home runs.
For the Bears, Brianca Pridham blasted a two-run homer. Lydia Borger added a double and run scored.
The loss dropped PV to 0-3, with Freedom upping its mark to 2-1.

Marian at Dallas Invite
Michael Fellin blazed to a first-place finish in the 100 at the annual Bruce Dallas Invitational at Cumberland Valley High School.
Fellin had the fastest time in the preliminaries with an 11.30, and then bettered that mark with a 10.95 to win the event.
The Marian sprinter then helped the 400 relay team post a time of 44.81 to take third place.
Jacob Fenstermaker had the seventh-fastest time (11.67) in the 100 to just miss making the finals.
A total of 33 teams participated in the Invite. The Colts finished tied for 17th place.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Pleasant Vy.-Scranton Prep
Pleasant Valley’s Alexandra Bush collected six goals and added an assist as the Bears posted a 15-7 non-league victory over Scranton Prep.
Devon Bush added three goals and a helper, while Emily Butler contributed a pair of goals and an assist.
PV, which evened its mark at 2-2, also received two goals from Brielle McInaw and a goal and two assists from Olivia Iandoli. Riley Green chipped in with two assists, and Keylee Dugey notched a goal.
Keeper Amanda Hayes, who recently recorded her 100th-career save, made five stops in the win.
TENNIS
Lehighton-Salisbury
Lehighton swept singles play to gain a 3-2 victory over Salisbury.
Aaron Miller and Daniel Hoppes won in straight sets for the Indians, while Luke Blauch needed three sets to earn his win.
The Tribe improved to 2-3, with the Falcons dropping to 3-3.
