I-81 is open in Schuylkill County

Interstate 81 reopened in Schuylkill County early Wednesday morning, two days after it was shut down by a mass casualty crash.

Trooper David Beohm, state police public information officer, tweeted early this morning that the highway had opened.

Tuesday night he said that crews continue to remove vehicles. Police estimated Monday that 50 to 60 vehicles were involved. The northbound lane was closed between Exit 107 and 119.

“Construction work will need to be done once the road has been cleared,” he said.

Beohm confirmed Tuesday morning that there were fatalities but said the number had yet to be determined. The Associated Press quoted the Schuylkill County coroner’s office as saying five people were killed in the massive wreck.

The incident occurred at 10:38 a.m. Monday, during a whiteout caused by a snow squall.

At least 24 people were injured and taken to four area hospitals.

Police have not released a final report.
