Slatington gets help with police chief selection

The Slatington borough council has selected an external review committee to help with the selection of a new police chief.

The committee includes: Chief Michael Marks from the Whitehall Township Police Department, Chief Glen Dorney from South Whitehall Township Police Department, Chief Pete Wayda from the Walnutport Police Department, Chief Anthony Strauss from the Coopersburg Police Department, and Ed Hartman, a former magisterial district justice and detective with the Whitehall Police Department.

Borough Manager Dan Stevens said the internal resume review committee is accepting resumes until April 1. Anyone interested in applying for the position can apply by mail or drop off a resume at the borough building.

Once they have gone through the resumes and selected candidates that they would like to consider, then they will give the external review committee about 10 candidates to interview.

The internal review committee was selected in February. It includes council members Ronald Kratzer and Kevin Steckel; council Vice President Bryon Reed; Mayor Jeralyn Schoch and borough Manager Stevens.

The external review committee will interview the candidates and select about three of them to recommend to the borough council. From there, the council will interview them and select one for the position of police chief. This is the process the borough used in 2006 when it selected David Rachman as police chief. He retired in January.
