Tamaqua woman charged with assault, harassment

Joan Belford Blevins, 37, of West Broad Street, Tamaqua, has been charged with simple assault and harassment.

On Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. borough police responded to Fegley’s Mini Mart on Center Street for a fight involving three women outside the store.

On scene officers spoke with a female victim and her daughter who said they had been assaulted by another woman, later identified as Belford Blevins.

The mother said Belford Blevins asked her for a cigarette on her way into the store. Inside the store a clerk told the victim that the suspect had caused a problem in the store earlier.

As she was leaving she and Belford Blevins exchanged words with the suspect then coming after the victim and grabbing her shirt and knocking her to the ground. She suffered scrapes to her right leg. The daughter saw the incident and came to the aid of her mother to try to stop the fight. At this point Belford Blevins came after her and all three ended up on the ground. The daughter sustained a bruise under her right eye and nose. Both victims were told to seek medical help.

Belford Blevins was later located walking along Broad Street and taken to the police station and later charged.
