Lehighton grad Phelan receives Patriot League honors

Lehighton graduate and American University field hockey senior Maura Phelan recently earned a spot on the Patriot League Fall Academic Honor Roll for the fourth consecutive year.

To be eligible for an honor roll distinction, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 GPA or better during the fall 2021 semester.

Phelan, who is majoring in Graphic Design, also was recently named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad for the fourth year in a row.

The NFHCA National Academic Squad program, sponsored by OPA Winning Teams, honors collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the current academic year, and were nominated by their NFHCA member coach.

Phelan, the 2017 Times News Field Hockey Player of the Year, helped American claim its 12th Patriot League title this season with a 2-1 win over Lafayette. The win came on the heels of the team’s 10th undefeated conference season and 12th regular season title.

The Eagles fell to Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
