Summit Hill considers police regionalization study

Carbon County’s District Attorney Michael S. Greek has asked Panther Valley communities to consider a study on a regional police department.

Summit Hill Mayor Jeffrey Szczecina told the council that Attorney Greek will meet with representatives of the three Panther Valley boroughs - Summit Hill, Lansford and Nesquehoning - to further discuss the concept.

Before becoming the district attorney, Greek had served as the solicitor for both Summit Hill and Lansford, as well as Coaldale. A prior regionalization study included Coaldale with Lansford and Summit Hill. Mayor Szczecina said Coaldale might again be considered but Greek only contacted the Carbon County boroughs. Coaldale is located in Schuylkill County.

Szczecina said the district attorney is asking the municipalities to merely consider the suggestion.

In other police matters:

• Chief of Police Todd Woodward said that body cameras have arrived for the department. The department will start using them on a trial basis.

• Szczecina reported that a license plate reader for the police department was also purchased, and police officers are awaiting training before using it. The reader, which cost $23,220.25, was bought with a grant.

• David Wargo, chairman of the council’s police committee, said he wants the committee to meet at least quarterly.
