Six area athletes part of LV Scholar-Athlete banquet

The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation will hold its annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet on Sunday at the Northampton Banquet and Community Center.

Six area athletes will be part of the ceremonies, which begin at 4:30 p.m. One player from among the 31 schools participating will be named the LV Scholar-Athlete.

Those from the Times News area include Jim Thorpe’s Keiran Mele, Lehighton’s Gauge Hartney, Northern Lehigh’s Trevor Amorim, Northwestern’s Ryan McDonnell, Palmerton’s Lucas Heydt and Pleasant Valley’s James Syracuse.

Bios on each of the six players follows below:

JIM THORPE

Keiran Daniel Mele

Mele, a 5-10, 155-pound kicker who ranks 15 out of 142 students, is an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Chinese Honor Society and has a 3.9 GPA.

The Olympian senior also participates in varsity track and soccer, the Future Business Leaders of America, and the PA Envirothon.

Mele volunteers with the Athena Ford Clean Up Day, coaches youth soccer, and performs National Honor Society service hours.

LEHIGHTON

Gauge Clifford Hartney

Hartney, a 6-1, 220-pound offensive lineman and defense end, ranks 25 out of 145 students.

An honor roll student, Hartney is also a member of the National Honor Society and holds a GPA of 3.86.

The Indian senior is a Student Government member, who serves as vice president, and participates in varsity wrestling and track.

Hartney volunteers with the Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center, and teaches swimming and diving at the town’s local pool.

NORTHERN LEHIGH

Trevor Jonathan Amorim

Amorim, a 6-0, 175-pound defensive back, tailback, and wide receiver, ranks 15 out of 107 students.

An honor roll student, Amorim has attained a 4.10 GPA.

The Bulldog senior also participates in varsity wrestling and varsity track, and is active in his community.

NORTHWESTERN

Ryan Allan McDonnell

McDonnell, a 6-0, 185-pound wide receiver and outside linebacker, ranks 45 out of 192 students.

An honor roll student, McDonnell is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Curricular Honor Society, and has a GPA of 95.1%.

The Tiger senior is a member of the Debate Team and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also volunteers with his church, the food drive, and the Football Booster Club.

PALMERTON

Lucas Lee Heydt

Heydt, a 5-10, 180-pound outside linebacker and skillback, ranks 18 out of 114.

An honor roll student, Heydt carries a GPA of 4.0917 and is a Student Government member.

The Bomber senior also participates in varsity track, the Environmental Club, and is a Mini Maxwell award honoree.

Heydt volunteers with a weightlifting competition, youth football, and a Turkey Day Trot race.

PLEASANT VALLEY

James Syracuse

Syracuse, a 6-0, 195-pound inside linebacker, ranks 53 out of 315 students.

An honor roll student, Syracuse is also a National Honor Society member and has attained a 4.0 GPA.

The Bear senior participates in Future Business Leaders of America, varsity wrestling and baseball. He also volunteers with the West End Food Pantry and various school events.
